Which is the #1 wire on a Chevy 350.

My next door neighbor took the wires off his truck and now the thing is backfiring and won't start. I figure he screwed up what goes where. Which terminal on the distributor cap is #1? It's a 1995 350. Thanks.

put it at TDC and see where the rotor points. Just to be sure.

#1 cylinder is closest to the radiator (not always the case on Fords). 18436572 firing order. When you look at the rotor with the timing mark aligned it will point at 1 or 6 depending on where you are in the cycle. I think it's easiest to either 1- Try it each of the two possible ways or 2- Pull the valve cover and look at the rockers to decide with is on TDC. My old Motors shows #1 as the front wire tower on the driver's side but that assumes that no one has pulled the distributor and stabbed it back in incorrectly.

Thanks guys. I know he didn't pull the distributor. The battery is dead now so he quit missing with it. The diagram that I found shows that terminal that is at about 6:30 on the distributor as #1 so I guess we'll find out tomorrow.

This diagram show the the #1 supposed to be around 5 or 5:30 position. But the only way to know for sure is to pull the number one plug and rotate the motor to get tdc.

if no one touched the dizzy.. the terminal that points to the drivers side front plug is #1.. but pull cap to make sure..
6:30 would be pass side front plug..(driverside is around 5:30) 6:30 thats fords #1 on some blocks

firing order is cast into the intake in case you forget it's not a ford ;D

Number one is where the rotor points when the crank is set at TDC and both valves are closed on the #1 cylinder. At this point you'll put the #1 spark plug wire on the terminal that lines up with the rotor on the cap. Also #1 will be after 2 and before 8 in the firing order(clockwise rotation). ;)

I think that should have a flat top dist cap, and as was stated it should be numbered. Four wires out of left(drivers) side and five out of right(pass) side. Our biggest problem with these have been coil wire shorted (rubs on dipstick tube). Cheap new wires can also cause your problem right out of the box(think autozone,etc.). If he pulled the cap, make sure screw holes were not damaged(plastic breaks easy). Hope this helps and doesn't send you on a space trip(to Uranus) :D

So have I. You can put number 1 wherever you want it.
Find TDC, drop the distributor in so that the wires and/or vac. advance are in the right place... wherever the rotor is pointing, that's your number one (more or less).

...but, if the distributor hasn't been pulled, it's probably where that illustration shows it to be.

That's how I do the sixbanger. I choose the tower closest to #1 and put the rotor there. That's why I suggested pulling the left valve cover to find out when the valves are closed, but if he's pretty sure the distributor's never been pulled he could just try it.
