    Ford AOD issue.

For lack of a better phrase, the AOD in my Cougar is acting weird. On cool days it shifts fine...no issues. On scorchers like today, the AOD was sluggish. When I put it in drive, it took a few seconds for the transmission to actually engage (it was also like this leaving stop lights), and when it shifted it "jerked". This is one of their AOD-E transmissions. Could this be vacuum related? I was thinking it was possibly a torque converter or maybe a pump in the transmission itself. The AOD and AOD-E are unfamiliar animals to me. I changed filter and fluids 4,000 miles ago and the fluid wasn't burnt and their wasn't an overabundance of gunk in the pan. The transmission was (supposedly) rebuilt approx 75,000 miles ago, and the wife said it was doing it in Ohio on hot days (how come I'm just now hearing about this??). Thoughts?

Call Len Bertrand at Lentech in Canada. Don't have the number but I'm sure you can Google it. The man is an AOD wizard. On the other hand you could PM Indy for American advise.

Thanks Dan. I called Lentech earlier and they were as puzzled as I was. They agreed that it seemed to be a pressure related issue, but the symptoms I gave them where opposite what they usually see. As they put it "trans temp is trans temp no matter the ambient temp". They suggested I take a look at the shifter cable. Their thought is the adjustment is off just enough to be an issue when it's hot (and thus, leaking pressure right back into the pan) and not be noticed when it's cool. I'll have to put it on a lift this weekend and give that a shot.

A regular AOD only uses the TV cable to vary line pressure. I'm not so sure what the AOD-E looks at in terms of electonic inputs that would affect line pressure based on ambient temps.

Is this a factory AOD-E install or swap deal? I didn't see what year Cougar you have.

Given your change of fluids 4000 miles ago, maybe before it got hot and this arose is the fulid level still correct at idle?

          It would read TPS voltage.

Re adjust the TV cable. It is easy to do and the cable DOES control your shift points.
            when in doubt,.. throttle out

              AODE's don't use tv cable.
I'm guessing you have a internal problem.
First thing I would do is check fluid level and have the computer scanned for trouble codes. And look at data for the MLPS (manual lever position sensor or neutral saftey switch for the old timers.) Make sure it reads right in all ranges.
If no codes are stored, then drop the transmission pan. Look for any debris in the bottom. If there is any at all, chances are you will need to remove disassemble to find the problem.
If it is clean, you can try replacing the shift solenoids and possibly the EPC (electronic pressure control) solenoid. But you are spending money on parts and taking a chance that it may or may not fix the problem.

                Re: Ford AOD issue.

sorry, I don't know how i missed the E in AODE. Indy ShiftMan is right, this is an electronic slushbox. The computer tells the transmission when to shift.

You wrote that it was rebuilt 75k ago, were the shift solenoids replaced?
It has small electric motors that actually do the shifting, there could be some winding issues in your solenoids, but I would definately get the TCC checked out.

You mentioned that it doesn't want to take off from a stop, your torque converter cluch could be acting up on you, only partially engaging.

Does the car shudder, or does it seem to be drinking more gas than usual?
