IMO, if you've built an engine for a certain purpose and you still need spray to get there, you've built the wrong engine.

    Flame on... ! :o ;)

thats the way i've felt about nitrous.

But when it comes to horsepower per dollars you can't beat nitrous.

Like I always say build a motor to make the most HP naturally aspirated and then hit it with a nitrous shot. And I'm not talking about some little 150 shot, I'm talking about a 4 or 5 hundred hp shot, if not more. ;)

When I was street racing here, my brother and I would hide our systems,
              any way we could.

              TC's right, hp/$ it's hard to beat.

I think that's the wrong question for the desired answer you seek. To make the jaws drop, drag that POS to the line and let them see the CHUTE hung off the back (regardless of whether it needs it or not)!

Well, what if my "purpose" is to have a tame mill to drive around that I want to be able to hit with a big nitrous shot?

It hasn't "turned out" yet! Still a while to go.
Taken yesterday. Headlamp harness is now being taped up..

Granted it will be much easier to built a spray-engine for the purpose, but personally, I would still want to built a 500+ engine, with a 8 to 8.5:1 cr and a centr. blower under the hood. (Then again, I might be thinking about it from an owner with a "lesser cars perspective" ;). If I had 30+ cars laying around I might choose for nitrous aswell perhaps.

think of what a turbo 496 would do to street tires. & you gotta put a manual in it.
5+ rear gear ratio for the 1/8th mile?haha

I'm going to oddball it with a 500(ish) Caddy-monster, big single turbo or slightly smaller twins, 100 shot of nitrous for the strip for spool. Back it up with a BOPC SP400 with a big high stall
