  • Brake Question

Just did the fronts on Truck (2002 Dodge Diesel PU) today. Just pads and rotors as the old ones were below spec (yep - waited too long).

Anyhow - given that hydraulic brakes are self-equalizing - why is the pedal higher? I've done lots of brake jobs over the years but never had this outcome on a set of disc brakes.

Everything is fine - no noise, stops straight, etc. and the pedal is just a little higher. I'm just curious.

If the rotors were warped, they might have been pushing the caliper piston in a bit further as the rotor made it's revolution.

Other than that, I'm out of ideas

They felt OK but it's a BIG truck so maybe I didn't notice a warp. But I think I probably would. Mystery to me but yours is a great suggestion - thanks.

When pushing the piston back into the caliper did you release the bleeder and squirt the fluid out of the caliper or did you just force the fluid back through the system into the reservoir.... Either way you could have had some air in the system that when doing either of those two things got it out, which would give you a firmer feel..... And I'm not sure how much having less fluid in the calipers play into it if any...... Though I've done brake jobs and experienced what your experiencing..... So it's not uncommon......

It could be that forcing the pistons back in the calipers overcame seal friction in the master that was keeping the pedal from fully returning.

Got the brake parts from Advance. You wouldn't believe the brand name....... Wearever. "Where do you guys get these parts? China, Argentina, Sri Lanka?" Answer, "Wearever".

            But so far so good.

Thanks for the suggestions and it's good to know that it's not entirely unknown.

Would the Hydroboost play into it? This is my second set of Hydroboost and it was so long ago I can't remember much about the other truck except that I liked the brakes.

I have hit that old sweet spot. I know what you mean.

I attribute higher pedal to harder materials, fresh young...all goes back eventual.
there is purposeful ways to bring it up or down..like giving back brakes a bit more through proportion...as no factory gives a back brake full power. big back brake is a lower pedal.

a 4x4 truck, little subes etc..they like it. not many machines do.

Was gonna ask if hydroboost.. When I did my flatbed, it had a weak pedal then suddenly, I had all kinds of pedal pressure..
