Re: TRANS AM SHAKER HOOD... TALLEST POSSIBLE INTAKE???????HELP!!!!!!!!
My limited experience that I've seen is anything taller than a Performer won't work. It's borderline on anything except stock.BS'er formally known as Rebeldryver

Re: TRANS AM SHAKER HOOD... TALLEST POSSIBLE INTAKE???????HELP!!!!!!!!
There was a guy on ebay a while ago that was making adapters expressly for adapting the Performer RPM to a shaker scoop but I don't know what happened to him.
As I recall he had a few different kits based on engine and intake combo.Cheap, slow, half-assed: Pick threeComment

Re: TRANS AM SHAKER HOOD... TALLEST POSSIBLE INTAKE???????HELP!!!!!!!!
Without modifying the scoop and using a different air cleaner the Performer is as tall as you can run.
We build a 403 Olds powered Trans Am for a customer with Edelbrock aluminum heads and you have to run a Performer RPM with these heads. It was way too tall to reuse the factory air cleaner / scoop. I used a Holley carb, and built a drop base 14" air cleaner into the shaker scoop to keep it under the hood and looking stock when the hood was closed.Comment

This guy says he's running a Performer RPM. Might want to ask him what(if any) mods he need to do to make it fit.

My previous experience with the 403 suggests a larger problem - that the intake you're wanting to use is worth more than the whole motor. It need more than a tall intake - unless you've had it apart and done a bunch to it. On a stocker, headers, carb and intake brings the HP from a stock 170 to maybe 176.Comment

403AT LEAST ITS A GM ENGINE....... NOT GOING TO CLAIM THAT THE 403 IS THE BEST ENGINE EVER BUT MINE HAS HELD ITS OWN AND HAS DEFINATELY EARNED THE RIGHT TO STAY IN MY CAR...... MAYBE I GOT THE "FREAK BUILD" BUT I HAVE RAISED EYEBROWS WITH MY 403 IN THE PAST AND PLAN ON CONTINUING THE TREND.Originally posted by Falcon67My previous experience with the 403 suggests a larger problem - that the intake you're wanting to use is worth more than the whole motor. Yeah so far all I can find that definately will ift is the performer.... ive seen some of the kits offered that say you can keep the shaker but am rather un-impressed at this point. I know I can fabricate some type of drop down plate but wanted to stay with as close to stock look as possible... at least until you open the hood.Originally posted by MentalMuffinManand thats the same as a 326/350/389/400/421/455Originally posted by TheSilverBuickPontiac 455 installed.
the 403 is olds... and I think the tallest we got under the hood was a performer..Comment

I think the point was that the factory Cam and Compression are the limiting factors on that engine. Bolt on's don't do a dang thing until at least the cam is changed. On some of their 70's stuff GM figured out how to greatly under cam an engine. (Check out Car Crafts Pontiac Junker to Thumper 455 article (June 03?), but they seemed to have pulled it off their website)Originally posted by JH67FB403AT LEAST ITS A GM ENGINE....... Re: TRANS AM SHAKER HOOD... TALLEST POSSIBLE INTAKE???????HELP!!!!!!!!
Yes ive read it and it was a good piece.... i do agree that with the stock internals and ultra low compression it was nothing to write home about. Thank god all the stock internals have now been replaced...minus the crank i think thats all that remains internal.... a good cam and some headwork go a long way!Originally posted by TheSilverBuickI think the point was that the factory Cam and Compression are the limiting factors on that engine.
