I was thinking about this very thing in regards to transmissions the other day, but could not wrap my brain around just exactly why it should be expressed as a percentage. 15% in a 200hp car is 30 hp and 15% in a 600hp car is 90. All other things being equal, why would require more power to operate behind a more powerful engine? Why would the hp loss not be a constant?

Gear trains are rated by efficiencies- probably because the higher the torque transmitted, the higher the friction between the gears and the greater the losses. Here is a page I found on gear efficiencies:

I have had two issues with mine. It is a Strange Engineering S-60. Not pleased at all with it.

First issue was it spun a bearing race on the drivers side carrier bearing.....made a mess. This happened during Drag Week 11.

Second issue is it cracked the welds for the tubes where they went into the houseing. I run a radial, and once and a while they will chatter.......I am guessing this had something to do with it.

Rewelded and had a brace built for it.....

          This is with 750ish HP 3600lbs, 1.32-1.33 60fts....

Sorry it took me so long to reply.......haven't been online much.

Friction force is mu times normal force. I don't know why it is, but it is.

If the 9" rear in my car required 90 hp to turn all the time, I'd get much worse mileage than I do. Same with the TH400. I know they're not the most efficient drivetrain components around, but the car will move when idling in gear

Not many. Like any other engine, it's making enough power to overcome it's internal friction, that's it.
