Yes there is a distance to the cross bar... but off hand I dont remember if its 3" or 6" .. butOriginally posted by slimbo5 View PostThanks. I didn't realize there was a rule regarding distance.
I set it at the spec and run a fixed seat position (but I set it up for myself or the customer)...
if you look in the rule book(on line now days) it calls that outComment

The rules focus on helmet distance from the roll bar/main hoop and reinforcements to race seats of aluminum or fiberglass. SFI has a ton of upper mount rules but you'll be safe with a 6" square plate bolted to the back of the seat with a pivoting or sliding tube that bolts to the cross bar.

I have never seen the tech guys check for lower seat attachment method. Just paint it all black (or cover it in matching leather) and bolt the seat back so it doesn't move if they give the rattle test, which I have seen.
All of this is odd as you can go 8.50's with stock seats and no back brace and pass tech, go figure.Last edited by CDMBill; July 31, 2013, 04:31 PM.Drag Week 2006 & 2012 - Winner Street Race Big Block Naturally Aspirated - R/U 2007 Broke DW '05 and Drag Weekend '15 Coincidence?Comment

Never really gave this much thought. I was going to mount my Kirkey on a set of factory sliders to save weight and get my broken backed factory seat out of the car.
Sounds like I will either need to come up with a seat brace or fix my factory seat (needs to be done anyway) and leave it in to be legal. Dang it, something else to fix.................Last edited by JSisk; August 1, 2013, 06:10 AM.WWW.JSISKPHOTOS.COMComment

I always thought it strange that a factory seat was fine.. even a 2 doorOriginally posted by CDMBill View PostI have never seen the tech guys check for lower seat attachment method. bench seat that flips forward was legal.. and yet a so called race seat has
other specs to meet the ruleComment

Lot more of a chance of me winding up laying in the back seat because a broken factory seat than bending a kirkey backwards, LOLOriginally posted by MR P-BODY View PostI always thought it strange that a factory seat was fine.. even a 2 door

Another question about the NHRA "Chinese" Regs . . ..
I want to make sure I understand . . . I do not need to bolt my FACTORY seat to the horizontal crossbar, right?
Also, regarding NHRA GENERAL REGS on fuel tanks (§ 20, Subpart 1.5 "Tanks" ) . . .
If I have a metallic fuel cell mounted between the frame rails where the stock fuel tank normally resides (between the diff and the rear bumper, under the trunk) , that is NOT "outside body and/or frame" and does not need the "steel tube frame constructed of minimum 1 1/4 O.D. x .058 chromoly or .118 mild steel tubing" and can be attached with steel straps of sufficient thickness and proper grade hardware, as millions of OEM-style tanks are attached, correct?Comment

You are correct... BUT if it hangs down far it needs a skid plateOriginally posted by The Outsider View PostI want to make sure I understand . . . I do not need to bolt my FACTORY seat to the horizontal crossbar, right?

What would be the specs on a legal skid plate?
(I'm sure hoping not to have to move it to inside the trunk . . . kinda need that space for all the crap I've got to carry for DW . . . and that checklist is still very long . . . only 36 more days before "D-day")Comment

the bottom of the tire to the bottom of the rear bumper.. take a string and put it
from the bottom of the tire to the bumper and see if your tank is below the string)..
if it is I believe 1/4" alum was good for a skid plateLast edited by MR P-BODY; August 1, 2013, 01:12 PM.Comment
