  • how many 9 second or faster street cars exist?

how many cars do you think exist in this country that could show up at the drag strip, bolt on a set of slicks and run 9's or quicker? And still be able to make a drag week style drive without breaking down. Do you think there's 500? 200? 1000?

    I'd guess 10000+

watch the texas mile videos, etc..
there was even a 250mph porsche that purred down to an idle to go home in florida.

it is not so much the leap of drag race, but overall speed today.. numbers will reach a low for preservation, something old, and stay there.

I'd bet it is a huge number. Power adder technology has made 9's the new 10. I'd also bet that the majority of those cars are not track legal to run in the 9's.

I think that you're right about the cars not being legal for the speed James. I know of lots of cars that could run the number, but the owners got frustrated with having to buy SFI gear all the time. Most of those cars end up sitting or the owner races at slower speeds.

There is probably a lot more 9 second street cars nation wide than I would figure, because my thinking is based on where I live. It's a 2.5 - 3 hour drive to get to the closest 1/4 mile dragstrip. So we have a lot of cars that the owners think are 9 or 10 second cars that would probably run 12's or 13's their first time at the track. In areas with more drag strip action, the cars probably tend to be quicker.

There's less 9 second cars here because of the elevation!

Went to NO ET race last year at Milan Michigan... There were so many car running mid 10's to mid 9's I couldn't believe it... At the NO ET race they are very lax on the rules... a lot of turbo and blower LS cars...

The vast majority of cars that fit the criteria are trailered everywhere, and very rarely get driven on the street. I think that's the whole reason events like Power Tour and Drag Week came into being, to get these cars out of garages, and trailers, and get them back on the public streets where they can be seen, enjoyed, and appreciated.

It's the complete a Drag Week type event that drops that number to maybe 1500. Lot's of junk can make a lap or two in the single digits, 95% of them can't be driven 10 miles in traffic.

I believe with all the technology out there now there are a lot of 9 sec cars and FASTER. Have my daughters GN here that she drives every summer as her daily beater. 6/8 thousand miles a summer. Take it to the track an race (do nothing but let some air out of the drag radials) in the 9s then it rained. She went over to my car to take her suitcases out to continue up to the lake 2 more hours away.. STREET car. Now my 88 RX7 is getting her old motor in a month or so. BUT it hasn't been RACED yet. So that falls into the woulda, coulda, shoulda category AND it is a very large group !! Oh I have more cool guy parts than Joe Shmow an he ran in the 9s.. I ran him an beat him !! We have all heard the stories. Her car weights in @ 3700 #s.. Mazda is prob 3000. What a blast they are to drive .
I remember when a good running 11 sec car was FAST on the street.. Hey they still are but throw a turbo on it an ya can create a monster. (Yes easier said than DONE).

Daughters car she drove up to the top of Mount Washington in NH.

We have had a fleet of them since 86.. She has 2 GNs and a Limited T. Great cars that are easy to make go. It was hard for me to get involved with them back then after being a die hard Ford guy !!
