Not to be a smartass - I really don't know. Was there a top loader that wasn't a 4 speed? Folks always say "top loader 4 speed" and I was wondering if there was an alternative. The Ford 3 speeds I knew (I think B-W made them) loaded thru the side cover.

Some Ford's had t-10's. Or side loaders. Ford also had a 3 speed top loader.

Now that I think about the Ford 3 speeds would take a Jeep top cover shifter so yes, top loader!

2 of the 63-4 Galaxies we derbies (kinda rusty/titleless) had 3 on the tree top loaders. Plate on top

See above. The early Jeeps used the same trans and the top cover shifter is a bolt-on. Studebaker also used that trans (both w and w/o overdrive) and my '53 had the Jeep conversion which worked great. Of course you're not likely to need that info ever again.
