    LearJet calls it a day

At the end of this month, LearJet production will cease in Wichita. Founded in 1967 by legendary genius Bill Lear, the company produced over 3000 business jets. LearJet literally invented and defined the term "luxury business class aircraft". This photo shows the very first Model 23 to roll off the production line. LearJet is now looking for anyone in this photo to be present for a special event when the last Learjet rolls off the line later this month.

My dad worked in Customer Service starting in 1968, doing repairs and mods on LearJets until he retired in 1999. He actually knew Bill Lear, aka "The Old Man", so he's not in this photo - but he knew a bunch of these people, and all of them have passed away or moved far from Wichita after retirement. It will be a sad day in history, and for Wichita when production ceases. Customer Services and Spare Parts will continue for years to come (hopefully).

Dad knew Bill's 4th wife - Moya, and the four kids they had were around the plant a lot growing up. Everybody who worked there knew who the Lear kids were. By the way, she went by Shanda.

Dad has a ton of stories about Bill, who slept little and worked all the time. He was tough, demanding, and a brilliant engineer and innovator. Once you met him, you never forgot him.

His Wikipedia page.... I should mention, that of the many things he came up with, he didn't bother to patent.

I really hate to see this. I got my Learjet type rating in 1988, and flew them until 2019. The Lear 35A will be the DC-3 of the business fleet. I'll be surprised if it ever fully retires.

And the end finally comes. Shameful - a company with such a legacy and name should live on...
