  • More Shop Improvements

Now that the go cart is outta here I'm on to other projects. I've decided that I don't like my current shop setup and am rearranging the work areas, mostly consisting of moving the machine area (table saw, drill press, etc) under the mezzanine and opening up other areas as open shop space. The fist step was bringing down a large metal cabinet from up on the mezzanine, making shelves for it (it only had one shelf in an over 6' tall cabinet) and loading in auto body tools along with the new stuff for the MGB which will be worked into the car as I get to it.

Perhaps more exciting - I seem to always be short of work tables to hold the bits for the current project at hand. For example, if doing brake work I don't have a place to put the rotors and such. I also had the rotisserie from the MGB which is pretty much a 1 car device that I'm not likely to use again and it's taking up shop space. So I had a brain wave and am turning it into 2 rolling shop tables. The first one is done and the second one is coming along much more quickly as I now have a design.

A pic of the rotisserie as a reminder. Also a shot of my young helper.

The welded base: The casters and mounts are straight from the rotisserie (though cut down to be narrower) and most of the rest is salvaged from one half of the A-frame.

And with a 3/4" plywood top. I sanded the ply with 180, applied sanding sealer and then a coat of semigloss poly. Not intended to be furniture grade but there's enough finish to keep oil from immediately soaking in.

This gets the rotisserie out of my shop space and will allow me to toss some boxes that I've been using for tables so all in all a shop improvement.

Put another piece of angle on the bottom and you can have two shelves per table. Or leave it alone and you can put a chair up to it.

I'm back and forth on adding a bottom shelf. Definitely a maybe.

I finished the second rolling table and now more shop organizing so I can put them to work.

Making the legs straight using a fence post level. This assumes A) that the floor is flat (it's close) and B) that the fence post level is correct. Seems to have came out more or less OK.

And my pair of more-or-less matching tables. Hey, I started with scrap from a project that did not feature much design or precision!
