  • Anyone ever bought parts for a project they don't even own yet???

Yep, that's me. I've been acquiring parts for a 70 C-10 I don't even own yet. I bought the whole serpentine assembly off of a 91 Suburban ($120) sans water pump, a TBI unit sans distributor (but did include the computer, manifold, wiring harness, and various sensors - $175), and a hydroboost unit out of a 94 Astro. I hope to bring the truck home soon.

I've been able to get away with this by telling the wife that all this stuff will fit any GM rear-drive car or truck with a small blck V-8.

Bought the 409 block three years ago.......knew eventually
I wanted to build it and find a shoebox to put it in.

I have two engines, just picked up a woodgrain deluxe steering wheel last week, and have several trim pieces for a Firebird I don't have. I don't have to justify it to anyone

I found a 55 harley tail light in a project car I got about 20 years ago (and got rid of soon thereafter). I also bought a matching tag bracket at a swap meet a few years later. So one of these days I'll get the rest of the parts and build a panhead.

Well, it's going to get sillier before too long. I'm keeping my eyes peeled for a set of vortec heads and a 200-R4 transmission. That, and other bits and pieces as I come along them in the junkyard.

I'm also wondering whether to pick up an Air Gap manifold while I'm at it. I know the old Performer that's on the truck now won't work with the vortec heads.

I keep this up, and the wife will eventually have my hide. But then again, I've always operated on the "better to ask forgiveness than ask permission" rule!

If I waited until I had the project car I wouldnt have all the parts I need to build four of five of them laying around the shop right now. So yeah I buy stuff for things I dont have yet, and for things I havent figured out what I want to do with it... like some of the Firebirds I have. That is why I have eight 2004R cores and seven 400 blocks laying around.

I bought a complete '51 Ford 8BA flathead V8 with trans, clutch, bellhousing, plus a ton of spare parts. I had lofty plans of building it, then building a Model A pickup around it. I had it for three years, rebuilt the carb, pulled the motor half apart, did a bunch of research; but in the end, I really needed to concentrate on the cars I had already, so I so it all. It all went to a guy who races at Bonneville as he needed a spare motor for his car. He races in blown fuel and gas roadster class, so I feel it went to a good home.

i havent done that yet, but i have been close to doing it many times.

i shouldve done it once when i had the chance though, i had found a complete jdm h22a honda drivetrain for $400 but had nothing to put it in so i passed on it and bought the nitrous kit for the mustang.

2 weeks later my friend tells me he knows where i can get a 96 civic with a b18 already swapped into it for $400 but the timing belt snapped.

i wouldve had an H22a powered honda for around $1000 by the time it was all said and done.

h22 powered civics run low 13's high 12's in the 1/4 on street tires with mild bolt ons and still get 30mpg.....theyre also worth around $4k for just a stock civic with a stock h22 in it, this wouldve been a modded h22 in a modded civic......

I have 10 beautiful forged 4.010 BME buick pistons ... because they were 20.00 a piece brand new. I have no idea what I'll use them for or if I'll ever use them. Some day maybe I'll math out some frankenmotor application for them.

But when you do get another one, you'll be set! LOL

Since I don't have a garage, I have to be careful what I buy since I have limited space for storage. That, and I retire in 9 months. Moving companies usually won't move auto parts of any form, so what I don't swap onto the truck has to go in the back. It'll be nice to actually settle down somewhere and not have to worry about moving every few years.

It seems like you just made Chief yesterday! Retirement already? (That's my jealousy coming out. I can't wait to stop moving.)

The closest I have is a three-one barrel intake with carbs and linkage. It COULD be totally overhauled and installed on my current project, but there is no real plan to do so. I bought it from a guy while looking at an engine he had for sale. He casually mentioned this "other intake setup" he had and I impulse bought it for $100.

A guy that works for me has been trying to get me to buy a rebuilt Nailhead and flathead engines that his Dad rebuilt a decade ago and have just sat and collected dust in his shop since. I really really really want to buy both but really really really don't have any where to put them or anything to use them in. I keep telling him, when I get a garage I'll be showing up with cash in hand though
