Well Randal it sounds to me like you're a construction project away from a real fine set up.

I'd go with an all steel "clear span" building with spray foam insulation on the inside, with the winters you have - the insulatioin will make it a happy place to be - regardless of what heating system you eventually go with, radiant tubes are nice, woodstove would work great, and of course there are the home built waste oil furnace ideas all over the web too.
There's always something new to learn.

Old people aren't moving away and young people keep moving back (people born and raised here seem to have a hard time in the bigger world) and I have more fingers than the number of new lots with homes on them in town since 1955. Tight market until you drive 10-15 miles outside of town (more than doubling my commute) and even then the prices are still in the high $100G's to $300G's. Why? idk.

We'll be revisiting this topic a year from now ;)

In other news, I've assembled the rear calipers and will paint them tonight. New inner tie rods, drag/center link and idler arm showed up yesterday. I decided I might as well replace all the steering components and those were the last of the old parts.

All good points. You do what's best for you. I looked into buying a now closed fire station from the city that's around the corner. It's really small for a fire station. One long garage included in the 4000 sq ft. They wanted too much for a opening bid. $1.2 million. I don't think it sold.

Re: The Silver Buick's well Silver Buick!

Two more packages on the door step today (UPS), one is the Summit Exhaust system and the other the Summit Drive Shaft Loop kit. Got a call from the tire shop, my rear tires are in, so I'll pick those up tomorrow. Also got a very non-descriptive message from Randy's Ring and Pinion saying they need to talk to me about my order of shims...dandy, I'll have to call them back tomorrow.

Today I re-torqued the heads (back the nut off an 1/8 of a turn, re-tighten) and I bolted on a set of rocker arms and rotated the engine 720* and didn't get any interference, granted the lifters are pretty much compressed. I started to degree the cam, but I need to get a nut to go on the balancer bolt to tighten the degree wheel to the crank, I may have to look into a shorter balancer bolt too, as it's on I picked out at the hardware store. I also painted the rear calipers black.

Front of the engine, thanks Stage1scott for the oil slinger (on the crank snout). The white box that has become my work bench is the exhaust kit.

I looking in the spark plug hole, I could read the TA stamp on the piston :P It was harder taking the picture.

          The new leaf springs.

And just because, I took this yesterday at work. The top of the pit was in thick thick fog but it was nice and clear in the pit.

The Camper Trailer I picked up at the Pick-a-part off Milliken in Ontario, CA. It had $599 listed on it, but I got it down to $250. Then put about $50 worth of tires and wiring on it to get it back to Ely. It's going to be perfect for Bonneville, it has a kitchenette with sink and stove on the other side under a cover. The inside has green shag carpet and light weight cheap wood panelling. After I get the Skylark running it'll become my next project. I plan on gutting the interior. Reinforcing the flooring with new wood and sealing it up. It was missing the front window (the frame is there and in good shape though) and the little plastic vent cover on the roof so lots of California rain got in there, infact it was pouring cats and dogs the day I got it. I towed it to a car wash for cover and used duct-tape and heavy plastic sheeting to cover all the holes. It has worked pretty good. The bad news is title issues. I don't think there are any real issues, but the way Nevada DMV law is written I need to re-title it in California before I can get a Nevada Title. Which means I have to get it inspected by either CHP or CA DMV as road worthy, then get a repaired salvaged Title from CA to bring to the Nevada DMV to register. The crap part of the whole thing is I'll have to tow it back to CA just to get it inspected. Friggin bureaucracy at it's best. Red tape won't allow NHP or a Nevada Shop or Nevada DMV declare the trailer road worthy for registration.
I think it would be cool to have a place to get out of the sun while at tracks and such. Having a fridge, bbq, stove and such works too. Maybe, an AC unit for it. Wouldn't take much in that tiny thing especially if it has some kind of insulation.

Take pics on the progress with the trailer when it happens.

You've read my mind. I'm thinking I'll have a small quiet generator for electricity with outlets. I'd be lying if I didn't say A/C and heat crossed my mind. I was thinking a 12v ice chest/cooler (my old man has one), complete with a solar panel or two on the roof. I'll definately keep updates on it when I start, but it will be very uncharted waters for me so no guarentee on good work ;D :P

When you work in a mine you have to have a few connections to get a basement dug, right?

I'm renting a backhoe from the local Catapillar store (and hoping for a Miner's discount) and my best friend here is a Back-hoe operator, so yes I think the connection will work out. Funny thing about a "car basement" one of my extravagant ideas was to really dig deep (well another four or five feet) and have the roof line of the garage at the same level as the first half of my backyard, then sod the roof of the garage so I have one big level back yard with a garage under it ;D But it would be some serious engineering that would be needed to ensure the roof could support "any" weight that would be put on it. Big "I" beams and lots of concrete?

I have thought about doing that for a long time......It would be sweet. And no one would know it was there.

Will it have a head too? Or not. Those really small trailers were 50/50 with indoor plumbing.

There is a closet/room in it that could conceivably have one of those self contained commodes, but I think I'll fore-go that.

sure - just set it up like a parking deck - corrugated steel over I beams, then concrete - heck you could have a basketball court on top, or a hot tub - or just sod -- no worries!

Cost - we don't want to talk about that.... but it sure would be a nice comfy place in the summer!

Not sure about condensation during seasonal changes though - that could get problematic - you'd have to design some type of venting system.

One of the most ingenius "reuse" scenarios I ever came across was at my friends excavating shop. He has a large hill on one side of his property with a pretty steep slope. He was hired to remove several old fuel tanks from gas stations as they were transitioning to the fiberglass tanks. He was paid to haul away the old steel tanks. Instead of cutting them up for scrap - he dug into the hillside with his backhoe - screwed in ventstacks where the fuel outlets where, and buried the tanks into the hillside - he then cut the ends of thanks open to make a "door" and filled the tank with several inches of sand.... he now has several "free" garages to park equipment and vehicles!

Reduce - reuse - recycle! As far as the basement/shop - if I had done that here I would wind up with a subterranean pool. Water table is about 18" down. Makes it easy to set posts for any project - dig the hole, put in the post, put in a bag or two of ready mix - and you're done. The hole fills with water and soaks the 'crete and it sets in a day. No actual effort required.
