  • Progress on the Buzz Bomb

After Luke helped with the valve lash I had just a couple of details to polish up to be ready for Maxton. The oil was a bit mucky, the gage pod had come loose from the dash bar, I needed to convert the front end over to PRO status, and it needs to go to the dyno. Everything is done except the dyno tuning. Hopefully Wayne can get me in Monday or at least early next week. It sounds pretty good as is - nice and crisp. Of course, that doesn't mean I'm getting all I can out of it. In the worst case I'll run it as/is for this meet and get the super tune for May.

I'm hoping someone can video a Maxton run so we can post it on here.

How did the dyno day go, Dan? Are we looking at
a major HP and TQ improvement for the sweet 6?

Just got a voicemail from Dan... apparently, the mighty 6 was
only operating on 5 cylinders today, which cut back on his HP
potential. Not sure if there's an electrical problem or a piston
blew a ring out of the bottom, but hopefully he gets it going
by this or the next Maxton meet!

Re: Progress on the Buzz Bomb

OK. I'm back and it ain't good. Seems like SOMETHING happened to #1 cylinder over the winter. I got back too late tonight to begin diagnosis but it clearly isn't minor and the Buzz Bomb won't make it for this meet. We had spark and fuel, but zero compression on that hole. I'll have to pull the head and see what I see. Problem is, I'm leaving for St. Paul to see the Grands next Monday so I can't touch it 'till I get back - I have to pull maintenance on ME's HHR (LOF) and on the Dak (rear axle bearings, LOF).

I may just buy a store-bought short block for this year (Auto Zone, NAPA, etc.) and build something GOOD for next year. I'll be able to make a better decision once the head is off.

I have a vid of the dyno run if I can figure out how to post it. Can I use Photobucket and post like a pic? Right now, it's out of the camera and laying on my desktop.

What we did learn - 134.52 HP, 184.37 lb/ft according to Wayne's Dynojet. I'm guessing I was running 100 HP stock so I might have been a bit faster - IF it didn't decorate the track. No tellin' what it might do on 6! It was also WAY rich but with a dead hole all bets are off.

Thanks for your interest - I'll keep you posted.

Dan - are you sure it's not a valve adjustment error???

that sucks majorly.... I hope you get it sorted out....

                        aint fair!

Looks like you will join all of us without a car this meet.

Re: Progress on the Buzz Bomb

Valves were OK a few days ago. As I stewed on it last night I came up with one possible cause - one of the water pump bolts can run into the #1 bore if you use a bolt that's too long. When tightened it can crack the cylinder wall. This is spelled out in the Santucci book. Did I remember this when installing the water pump - NO! (John - pay attention to this on the 292). So the first thing I'll do is pull the water pump and see what I can see. Sometimes I feel like such a dunce. But I'll get over it.

I remember reading that in the book as well - and it's not much of a concern on the 292 because the block is so much taller....

That's a good place to start - drain the cooling system and pull the water pump. If that bolt boss appears damaged in the block - wouldn't JB weld be a good enough fix to get you to the meet this time around?
