A 4L80E is a good way to slow down 1 full second in the quarter and with any kind of real power it has to have a Ton done to it so it will hold up

If I get a 4L80E in my Centurion I'm going to test that first half ;) What's the weak link in the 4L80E?

Rossler ended up puting a vac set up like a old power glide on Docs car to at low vac put full fluid pressure at WOT to get it it quit burning out the clutches no granted its 960 HP at the flywheel but the converter was like 75 LBS and making a lock up converter stall 6500 it never seemed to work every time we put it in 10.60's and was a slug for 300 ft take it out 9.50s all day long.

What I wonder about is gearing a car where with the 2.48 low of a turbo 400 racing it with 2 gears and having it go to high just at the end and using the converter longer down track like a slider clutch "staying on the converter" I figue a 3.90 will make low a 2.10

Now that I have missed Drag Week and in a try not to tear my car apart I am going to see how much ET it drops so I can maybe go down the highway over 60 mph and 3200 like years past. I dont like the over drive with a lock up just for the converters weight in my car

If its a 4X4 you'll need a different tail housing as well. Personally, I'd stay away from the lock up 700, the convertor required adds a bunch of weight, and if you go non lock up, there is zero wiring. The 700 in my chevelle has gone 10.90s repeatedly and has held together for 4 seasons.....so they can be built to take the abuse.

The donor suburban is a 2 wheel drive ( Old work truck that has about 20,000 mi on a stock rebuilt trans , then we parked it due to much rust )

Since I have this trans I would like to use it just to save some bucks. How does the lock up work ? How can you have Lock-up or Non-lock-up and still have overdrive ?

Thanks!....As far as the lock up goes, I'm not a trans guy, but as I understand it, the electronics in the 700 are required to lock and unlock the convertor. By having the lockup feature, it adds a bunch of weight to the convertor for the internals that make it a lock up (more rotating mass). In other words, the trans is either built for lockup or non lockup, and the wiring/solenoids/etc are internal to the trans. External wiring consists of tapping into the brake light switch to tell the trans to unlock the convertor when you slow down and stop. The 4L60/65/80 transmissions require some type of computer control to function.

My opinion, if its a low mileage 700 going behind a mild small block, put a decent shift kit in it, a convertor to match (should be lock up if the 'burb is stock) and have fun. The external wiring is simple....

I ran a B&M lockup controller on my blazer 700
malfunction caused no lockup - 4th gear went poof - there is only a fraction of clutches in 4th , if you don't get lockup , it over heats 4th
a 350 - pre 80 is a real collectors item now
4l80 - too much line pressure drives the low rev planetaries into the back of the case - wrecking the case
4l80e is pretty tough , but it had a habit of breaking input shafts under heavy load - not complaining - wither of 94 , made so much changing input shafts on 2500 plow trucks , I bought aluminum heads
generous motors
the next hot setup is when the 6L90e gets out in the performance market
