There is an article on this in this month's Street Rodder. I only glanced at it but from what I saw it seems as though it is a paint. Too early to tell. Can't imagine it holding up for long periods of time and weather.Solutions are often obvious once you get the questions right. -

I guess it's the same process used to make mirrors?
With chrome shops all but extinct - and those still in business having to charge really high prices in order to deal with all the enviro-nazi regulations. I wonder if some shops will start offering this service - it's all water based.
The final coat is a clear coat paint process.

In all seriousness...I'd need to see the results in person, but it looks promising. Between this and the Percy's UV mat, you can make your own chrome parts at home.Whiskey for my men ... and beer for their horses!Comment

One of my employees does this. It looks very much like chrome, but can be scratched. The process is pretty difficult to do without getting any dust of other surface imperfections.
It is pretty cool when done right though. You can put it on almost anything. Along with some automotive display parts, we have a chrome baseball at the shop that he did.Comment

Are you considering doing this on a "for hire" basis?
It's a new process - so lots of folks don't know about it - but if you could get the word out that you do it and at a reasonable cost compared to re-chroming - that may be a great niche for you.There's always something new to learn.Comment

I'd definately consider it for redoing potmetal interior and grill parts on my car, though I'm going to try to make some of them out of polished aluminum first. Wonder how it works for doing things like resilvering turnsignal housings?Central TEXAS Sleeper

Paint technology is moving scary fast so I'm not too surprised that they came up with this process. As pointed out, it IS a paint and therefore may need to be redone from time to time, but still pretty cool.
Don't be too hard on the regulations on chrome plating. It is a REALLY nasty process and a lot of folks have had their lives shortened by it. Something had to be done. It is possible to do it responsibly but that's what makes it so expensive - lots of controls and PPE to keep us safe. It makes sense.

not that the hydro acid plating is a success..
I stopped listening to jay's paint after he used environmentally safe in california. You got paint eco safe, you got paint that is gonna get raped and beaten to death...
I go as far as hand baking some areas with a heat gun, 140-200 degrees...(most recently was an engine bay, warm day in september) two part eye watering urethane and base coat with a catalyst as well... ;)Previously boxer3main

The Chrome paint process has been around for some time and I have seen the results...they are quite good and it is something you can do at home if you have the skills...
I looked into it a number of years ago when I got my Fury as alternative to replating the bumpers....
If you can get results like this...why spend the extra money for chrome

We are looking at starting to do it for others. There is quite a bit of labor involved, so the cost is not real cheap. But, when compared to chrome it is much less. The beauty to it is, you can chrome anything that can be painted. Plastic, metal, fiberglass, you name it.
