The Hot Rod Reunion is in BG the same weekend. A few of us are staying until Sunday to watch the races.

BG also has Lost River Cave, a cave tour that is taken by boat.

    The truck museum looks cool.
Hot Rod Reunion race's sounds like a good idea, I might better book an extra night!! Also the cave tour by boat sounds like something that John could enjoy.

If hotel's are booked up in Bowling Green, Franklin KY about 12-15 miles south has several hotels at a cheaper rate. This is a good area which also has restaurants close by. Beech Bend Drag strip also has covered grandstands. Hearing protection is HIGHLY recommended.

Last time we went from Champaign to Madison, a few of us left early, drove 74 West up to Bloomington, then took Old Rt 66 all the way into St. Louis. The route crossed over a few times, but we ran 66 most of the way. I did not get to see everything I wanted to see, there is a good chance I will do a similar route again.
I think you might have left something there somewhere on the road.............I saw evidence

I stuck to the "official Route" last time thru... I'm all in for a side trip along Rt 66!

Are the Races on Saturday or Sunday? I'm staying Friday night & was planning on leaving later on Saturday afternoon/evening. Might have to try to extend my room if the races are Sunday.

Hot Rod Reunion is over Saturday afternoon/night. It is nostalgia cars racing and car show. It's a fun event. I go to it if it does not conflict with HRPT.

Honestly I find the "official" route to be maddening. PT is so large that the traffic on the official route is nuts to me. I prefer the side trips with a small group, or just blasting to the next stop and then enjoying that city.

Powertour is not in the cards for us this year but that is a event I might be able to get to.

In 2010 we hit the I-80 truck stop and museum (and ate at the buffet) on our way to the start in Newton. My co-pilot at the time was a truck driver so he loved it. I'm willing to bet hundreds of tour folk will be at the Corvette Museum Saturday morning before heading home, and hundreds more will be at the track spectating at the HRR.
                      GM G-bodies, because I can't afford a 69 Camaro.

If the weather is decent, I'll stick around for the HRR racetrack events, then roll north later in the afternoon/evening.

Couple web sites I used last time for RT. 66. I will probably run the western most alignment this time. We ran the eastern side last time.

                            http://www.illinoisroute66.org/

As Route 66 doesn’t appear on modern maps anymore, one needs a good description before heading out on the old 2-lane highway. Select the starting point and direction you’d like to travel.
