On the sump thing, here is a photo to compare the different ones these engines came with.

    From left to right:

    1. Highly modified Eldorado rear sump pan.

    2. Stock Eldo Front-wheel drive rear sump pan. This one has the starter pocket bumped out for more capacity and the front drain plug area cut out. That front drain will be plated over and a drain-back "trough" will be added to move the oil out of the front area and to the rear.

    3. 425 Rear wheel drive Mid sump. Note how the sump does NOT go as far rearward as the Eldo pan?

    4. Stock Rear wheel drive Front sump pan from a Cadillac Calaise. This is what the pan on the Mustang started life as. It was cut down to little more than a flange and created from there.

    5. Small block chevy '67 283 pan for reference.

While I'm at it, why not a comparison of the pickup tubes?

Top = rear wheel drive front sump pan pickup tube. Easily modified for a rear sump by extending the length. This is what the Mustang pickup started as.

Middle = 425 mid sump pickup. Also rear wheel drive.

Bottom = Eldo pickup Front wheel drive for rear sump pan.

Here is the RWD Calaise pickup tube from above modified by lengthing for the new rear sump. I like it better than the stock eldo pickup because it has less restriction to my eye, due to not having that super huge 180* bend in it. The special main bolt with the mounting provision for the pickup still needs to be moved to a different main cap in this picture.

Any of this help alleviate your itch Randal?

I can't see the pictures through the firewall here at work, but it's safe to say that oil pans don't do anything for me
      Escaped on a technicality.

that's quite a collection of caddy parts you have there - ah the joy of having barns to fill with parts!
There's always something new to learn.

I now know more about Caddy V8's than I ever imagined I would.

Just wanted to provide Caddy swap 101 for you. Dealing with the weird oil pan issues is 90% of a swap for these engines. Now you have one less hurdle.......all you need now is a local wrecking yard? Aren't there any old folks in that neck of the woods with old cars?

I haven't seen any old cadillacs around here. It'd likely be a matter of me taking my truck to CA and finding one in a yard there. I figure I'd look up what the equivalent Cadillac body is my Centurion (same as LeSabre), and see what oil pan it uses and hopefully get a set of motor mount frame pads for the engine too. Lets make this a bolt in deal It's not like I'm trying to cram it into a Ford or anything

                Bolt-in deal?

(Normally, this is where I would be rolling on the floor holding my stomach)

HOWEVER, it just so happens that I have a set of motor mounts AND a transmission crossmember from a B-body/500Cadillac swap.

If anything would make this a bolt-in deal for you, these parts would.

It is quite possible that a mount setup from a '77-'79ish RWD Cadillac CoupeDeville with the 425 would make a 500 a bolt in deal for that '72 Buick though, they are both technically B-body cars.

(cram it into a Ford..... it darn near up and jumped into the Fox body!)

Have I ever mentioned that I have a manual flywheel for a 500 caddy? and no, I will not sell it

                          I'm sticking with the TH400 or perhaps a 4L80e.

My "new" van has a 4l80e in it.......that is one LARGE transmission. Impressive, but LARGE.

I cut plenty of floor pan in the Skylark to fit the TKO-600, and would have no problem doing likewise in the Centurion if it needs it.
