Shipping wheels and tires...who's done it before?

Well - I had some wheels and tires listed on eBay, local pick up only.
A guy hit the buy it now button - I was elated.

Then I saw he lived in California.

Then he asked about shipping.

Well, originally I was thinking of getting a crate from work or building one and sending them truck freight.

Then the shipping / receiving folks at work suggested a heavy layer of cardboard on the wheel side, and a heavy coat of shrink wrap - with a shipping label on each wheel.
Should be light enough to go FedEx Ground.

How have you done it?

All of my mail order tires and wheels have arrived in individual boxes.

Son orders tires from the midwest pretty often..
They come with a band of shrink wrap with the label..
They have come UPS, FED EX and truck freight..
But none with rims attached...
One pair was skid steer tires and they were heavy.. UPS...
It SHOULD be shippable.... Unless they exceed the weight limit...

Pretty much what you described is how Ive shipped before- but its pricey. anywhere from 50-100 per wheel, pending weight and size.

Hopefully Pdub will chime in given that he's done a bunch of this recently. Pretty sure Tire Rack has the best deal figured out. Greyhound is a good tip, too.

tire rack sent my tires and wheels (twice - Spider and the Corvette)... for whatever reason, they ship only two tires together (bet it has to do with size and weight savings)

Go with Greyhound. I am in the shipping business and Greyhound can be much less than Fedex Ground.
You can get to the door delivery with Greyhound it's a little more expensive than terminal pickup.
I hope you have a Greyhound station near you. The cardboard and shrink wrap workes well.
Ship 4 seperate wheels. Greyhound max dimensions are 87x47x30 and 100 pounds for each package.

I've had them come in both boxes (wheels) and tires with cardboard, shrink wrap, and plastic banded ...

another way to do it is put them in boxes. you get charged extra for shipping tires as they are round and dont stack like boxes. i would expect the whole deal to cost you(buyer) about 150 total, but hopefully more like 80-90. just my experience having a tire store.

When I sold an extra pair of drag radials to Turk, nearly had a heartattack for UPS cost to ship. About $100 each tire. We ended up dropping them off at Spectre who gets a great deal on shipping because of the amount they ship a day. Chad used to work there and helped get us the buddy deal.

Funny y'all pay so much? I think he paid at th most $40 a tire.. Averages to $30/ per tire. Some places want your first born for shipping....

Companies who ship a lot of stuff get good deals. If you work for one or know someone who does, you can ship for less. When I lived at home, I gave my stuff to my Mom because the company she worked shipped with Fedex so much it was only $5.00 to overnight most boxes.

You could try Fastenal. They are a fastener supply store but they also offer shipping between their branches. Suppose to be pretty affordable for bigger items.
