  • 69 Camaro street strip car vs 68 Firebird drag car

First off, let me start of by saying that I feel lucky to have such a predicament.

As some may know, I have a 69 Camaro, 12 point cage, 468 BBC with somewhere around 700 hp, TH400, and soon to be installed Moser M9 with Detroit locker and 35 splines. I also put about $3500 into the fuel system last year, from tank to Dominator carb.

This car has been and always will be a street car first. It has full interior, stereo, and wipers, though I removed the heater years ago. I haven't been to the track since 2000, prior to the cage and current engine. Back then, I was hitting the track at least twice a month, but as I said, it was a street car first. About the only future mod at this point is the engine, which I had figured a short block 540 pushing around 800 hp.

Enter the problem child, or perhaps I should say, my delimna. With the recent purchase of my 68 Firebird, intended to be a designated drag car, what direction does that leave for my Camaro? The plan is to strip the Firebird of weight, hopefully down to 2700-2800 lbs, and run what we got for now...now likely being the 2015 season. Haha So, for the foreseeable future, my Camaro will remain the faster car, and combined with everythin I've done, closer to a true drag car.

I've always been the over the top, more power the better type of gearhead. It would hurt my pride a bit if I detuned my Camaro next engine. With all the supporting components in place, it would also feel a it wasted time and money to make it a more tame "cruiser."

We plan to get my Camaro to the track at least once this year, semi-regularly next season. In 2015, we could conceivably run two cars. Though when you consider one I bought for $500, and the other probably$30-$50k (who knows any more) invested in it, the smarter move would be simply race the Firebird...but then, what's the point of the 12 point cage in the Camaro? I love everything my Camaro is, have zero regrets about how I built her, I'm just confused as to where I go from here.

In addition, I also have my 89 Formula, now parked, awaiting restoration one day, which will remain an uncaged, more streetable, sub 500 hp cruiser. So I got that going for me.

So, what's the smart thing to do? Or, while maybe not the smart thing to do, what would YOU do?

Keep the Camaro as it is.. Detuned a little to make it more streetable but still nailing decent times... DECENT..because it is a street car..
The 'bird.. Go whole hog . It will HAVE TO BEAT the Camaro... Just cuz it is a drag car..

          Bob,

I like the way you think. I suppose a 540, making about the same power, would technically be detuned. Since the bigger engine wouldn't have to work as hard to make the same power. A solid 10 second street car is what i would like. I agree, the Firebird eventually has to be faster. I've had a nitrous kit collecting dust for years that could offer some support. My favorite cars to watch at the track are the 9-10 second cars. I'd like to get both in that group. I would gauge that as success, having two 10 second cars.

your ten second street/strip car is a great accomplishment.. I tend to agree with bob and keep it streetable, while turning the firebird into a holy terror for the strip only!

Sounds like your Camaro is closer to being a drag car already. By the time you get the Firebird to fast status, you will be retracing nearly the steps you made on the Camaro.

It is hard for me to give you specific advice because I dont you, or your story with your Camaro. But, I am going to suggest a different route. Go full race with the Camaro. Take the Bird, get it running and driving. Spend the dough on the mechanicals which is necessary anyways. Make the interior livable. Then drive it. Leave the body in its natural, lived a life look. Enjoy it.

Build the piss out of the Firebird and when you finally come to realize you've been misled for years you can always let your wife drive the Camaro.

                Next question.

                  You can "detune" a monster...
Our main derby motor is a former dirt track, either sportsman or winged, not positive.. Was dynoed ar 650-700 hp.
We got just the block..It was smoothed all over inside for oil drain back.. Heads went to a street racer as did the cam. It was supposedly a 14-1 CR motor..
I redid a set of older 1.94's/1.60's and decided on a solid lifter cam that was able to idle and move.. I figure low 12- high 11 CR as it sits..
In derbys you need a motor to start hot.. This does.. Last derby it would not, I attribute that to both headers becoming loose..
I think many of you on this site will be happy to have that motor in a street car!

I suppose there are folks who can make street motors very driveable with high compression....

Just build/tune for your useage.. You don't want to keep reving a monster with a cop watching..

Go to my derby car thread and look at before and after pics of that caddy with the motor I described above.. He beat a 73 Impala so the front pulley was exposed and bumper titty high..
Think of the power it takes to do that.. I did that with 500ci's of caddy, but they get hot..

Interesting dilemma .. one I wouldn't mind at all - I really like both models, although I've always preferred the '68 over the '69 styling.

                        What I would do (based upon the "state" of each car) is;

                        1) Leave the Camaro as is (no new 540) and use that as your racer until the Bird has been tested & tuned to consistent times. Will the "soon to be installed Moser M9 with Detroit locker and 35 splines" fit the Bird ?

                        2) Invest into the Bird to turn it into a dedicated race car, building it up right, uncompromising from the very beginning.

What type of drag racing do you want to do? head up, index, bracket? Do you just want to go fast or do you want to win.

                              Why have two drag cars?
