I remember my neighbor had one. The antenna in his back yard could pick up radio stations in southeast asia.

        nope

it was funny (to me) - last night I was talking to someone about HAM radios, and he said that his wife was talking to someone in Europe and in the Pacific Islands with their radio and very elaborate antenna. I was thinking the entire time, yeah, but email is more reliable.

My grandfather was big into HAM radios. Had cards all over his office from all over the world. I remember South Africa and even one from Mir. The only house in Colorado Springs with a 175 ft. antenna sprouting from the roof. And that man would climb the tower. Psychotic.

I mean no disrespect but is there any real use for them anymore. Just curious. Only thing I could think of is if you are in some real remote locale with no internet.

HAM radios and operators are used for operating the Silver State races here. Covering 90 miles of highway that has ~50 miles of no cell service.
              Escaped on a technicality.

Search and Rescue uses them a lot. That's not to say they're the end-all-be-all, but short of having a portable cell-phone tower (we're talking about that); we have no other way of communicating between the paid emergency workers, the helicopter pilots, and the other SAR teams.

still refer to my comment about email - my impression of HAMs is they're a bit too tightly wound about their hobby. I always love their expression when I tell them the reason I want to get my license is so I can push the talk button..... lol

to them, it's about as silly as someone buying a car to just drive....

they buy a diesel truck so they get the huge alternator, big batteries, and location to mount gigantic aerials?

                      So did you pass?

I have a friend that is really in to them. He used to walk around with a hand held all the time (I believe it was a Ham also) for when he wasn't at home. Got a little cranked off if you called him "Radio Man".

I dont do Ham, but I do like my 40 ch Cobra being cranked up a little bit. I remember back in the day when you was supposed to have a license to talk on CB, and they was only 23 ch then. Good luck on the test.

I had a friend way back, got a visit from the FCC when he was 12 or 13 for broadcasting on both upper and lower sidebands at the same time on a "turned up" citizens band. Oooops.
