it was funny (to me) - last night I was talking to someone about HAM radios, and he said that his wife was talking to someone in Europe and in the Pacific Islands with their radio and very elaborate antenna. I was thinking the entire time, yeah, but email is more reliable.Last edited by SuperBuickGuy; May 22, 2013, 05:24 AM.Doing it all wrong since 1966Comment

My grandfather was big into HAM radios. Had cards all over his office from all over the world. I remember South Africa and even one from Mir. The only house in Colorado Springs with a 175 ft. antenna sprouting from the roof. And that man would climb the tower. Psychotic.Editor-at-Large at...well, here, of course!

I mean no disrespect but is there any real use for them anymore. Just curious. Only thing I could think of is if you are in some real remote locale with no internet.Previously HoosierL98GTAComment

HAM radios and operators are used for operating the Silver State races here. Covering 90 miles of highway that has ~50 miles of no cell service.Originally posted by HoosierL98GTA View PostI mean no disrespect but is there any real use for them anymore. Just curious. Search and Rescue uses them a lot. That's not to say they're the end-all-be-all, but short of having a portable cell-phone tower (we're talking about that); we have no other way of communicating between the paid emergency workers, the helicopter pilots, and the other SAR teams.Originally posted by HoosierL98GTA View PostI mean no disrespect but is there any real use for them anymore. You live in Indiana - it's flat there, where we play - it's nothing but mountains and valleys

still refer to my comment about email - my impression of HAMs is they're a bit too tightly wound about their hobby. I always love their expression when I tell them the reason I want to get my license is so I can push the talk button..... lolOriginally posted by HoosierL98GTA View PostWell there ya go. to them, it's about as silly as someone buying a car to just drive....

I have a friend that is really in to them. He used to walk around with a hand held all the time (I believe it was a Ham also) for when he wasn't at home. Got a little cranked off if you called him "Radio Man".Previously HoosierL98GTAComment

I dont do Ham, but I do like my 40 ch Cobra being cranked up a little bit. I remember back in the day when you was supposed to have a license to talk on CB, and they was only 23 ch then. Good luck on the test.Comment
