Re: Bringing the Clevo-Ranger back to life in street/strip trim on the cheap

Well - good news - I've got a line on a complete roller long block E cam in it, with a dual plane edelbrock intake for around $350.

Supposedly it was pulled out a couple weeks before woodward in favor of a radical stroked 351W.... we'll see.

Any suggestions for buying a used long block out of the car? can't really do a compression check with a breaker bar, other than pulling the dipstick to look at the oil and pulling the oil cap to see what the heads look like --- other than judge of character - what do I have to go on?

If this works out it would save me a ton of time and hassle... may not even pull the heads?

If it was an H.O. block, I've found that the high nickle content
means the bores don't wear much unless there are other issues.

The rings do wear, though. Likely the cause of smoking.
I'd check the bores with a mic.

I've also found the old 351w heads to be somewhat crack prone.
The intake flow isn't that far off the 351 heads, and the E7TE's
      already have the hardened seats.

we've seen guys with these heads in the 10's, so they'll work.
C'mon, give me a chance with em.

        Bill
I'd be happy to have you do the porting work, as long as you can turn them around pretty quick (yea - like you need time pressure on a project for a putz like me) 'cause after you are done with them, they'll still need a valve job, the deck surface milled (get 'em flat and gain a bit of compression) and get 'em drilled and tapped for screw in studs - if the budget allows - I've got roller rockers I can use - but would have to get guide plates and studs.....

Well - the goal is to have it running for BSEAST, and I sure would like to atleast put a few miles and maybe a trip to milan under it's belt before then....

Why don't I get the E7TE's that I already have to you - they are already off the engine and in need of clean up....
If the planets align to where you can get the porting done,
then I can get them to the machine shop for a valve job, replace seals, mill, screw in stud machining

then I can swap them for the heads that are on the long block, and hopefully not need new pushrods....

If that doesn't happen in time - they go on over the winter....

If you aren't strapped for every dollar, I would tell the guy to let you take it apart. If you want to walk away after that, tell him you will buy the gasket kit. Worth a shot, right? If you find that there are issues, you can show him a even make a lower offer.

I think he'll find the block is ok.

                      I may be wrong....hope not.

BBR - these should work right?

could these possibly be stainless at this price?

I hope to pick up the long block e 303 cam'd engine tonight.

Most likely the flange on the passenger side will end up over the frame rail. Some guys notch the frame to clear. Might look at SN95 headers. I seem to recall they *might * fit better.

I'm not above notching the frame rail - I can always reinforce it with a piece of angle on the opposite side of the frame to reinforce if there is room - or a pice of flat plate spanning the modified area.... depends how extreme the notch has to be.

I will look into the SN95 headers as well - I've asked this seller what grade stainless they are - and if they can be returned for full refund if not modified in anyway.

If I run shorties - I'm thinking I need to find somebody selling an H pipe - so I can cut it up to make the duals work - at least I'd have something to start with - with the flange to bolt to the shorties - and the bend to get the pipes under the truck.... I have 3" warlocks in the boxes, and a couple chunks of 3" stainless tube from the old boat exhaust....

Maybe I should name this truck "the scrounger" ;D

Think of it as environmentally sound. You're reusing all those old parts instead of melting them into new Hyundais - or worse, sending them to the landfill. So you're doing your part.

                                How about "The Recycler"?
