  • 2011 ford V10 into 72 F150

An un-used 2011 ford V10 dropped into my lap yesterday (ouch) and Ive got a 72 ford f150 that needs a new motor. Id like to run a stand alone controller, but Im not sure of the ignition scheme. As a Mopar guy Im in foreign territory. Im assuming its a lot like the ford 3 valve 5.4 V8 motor? Im going to use an MS gold box from efi source to control the EFI (I hope) but would like anyones .02 on this swap, especially the ignition side of things...

I'm sure at some point Matt Cramer or DG will chime in and expound on your situation, but as I see it you have 2 basic choices (assuming the MS Gold is just an MS3 box which it appears to be from looking at their site.) you can convert the coil on plug back to EDIS and run that off the MS3 or you can replace the ford 2 wire coils for coils with built in igniters (like LSx coils, or nearly any other coil with 3+ wires). You'll definitely want to read and reread the megasquirt docs at http://www.msextra.com/doc/index.html. personally, if you haven't bought the MS Gold, I think I'd just go ahead and buy the MS3 Pro, it seems ready to run a V-10 out of the box. http://www.diyautotune.com/downloads...pro_manual.pdf

      Hauen,
Thank You for the reply. The motor currently has no coils, so going to LS or Hemi (Ive got Hemi coils here already) sounds like a good plan. The gold box should be able to drive those. I havnt bought the gold box yet, so I will look into the pro. Mike T is using the gold box to run the Dragpak v10 Challengers, so hes going to configure one for the Ford if he can. One of the issues right now is tone ring tooth count... Im thinking its 40 for the V10, but I cant find any solid confirmation. Not sure what to do with the intake either... 10 stack? 4 pack? Its got to be drive by cable, so Ive got a lot of options!

Your main concern is the target wheel - I'm not sure if the MS variants support it, although it wouldn't be hard for them to add. It's something like 40-2. I don't think you can run EDIS on a V10 since there was no EDIS module for it, and the firing orders aren't 90* apart either. But I have run many Viper V10s with MS-Gold, it works, you might want his V10 version (ask about it).

You can use a simple ignitor to drive stock Ford COPs. Beware, they want short dwell times, like 1.8ms max.

The rest would be simple I think.

I have zero information on the Gold box; it's not a DIYAutoTune product. Haven't even been able to find a manual on it posted online; DG may know about it.

MS3 in general will have no trouble with a 40-1 wheel on a V10.

            I'm guessing it's an EFISource.com product.
            Escaped on a technicality.

I have nothing technical to add. Just wanted to say it sounds interesting, should be a fun truck once done.

I've seen too may old front engine 60's V12 Ferrari with 6 dual throat carbs on Velocity channel's Chasing Classic Cars. I want to carb and distrib anything with more than 8 cylinders and put it in a car. I'm thinking 3 four barrels on a sheetmetal intake.

Very similar to the 5.4L, but no variable cam timing if I remember correctly.

Been a looong week. We too are getting excited about doing this swap. Thanks to all of the above posts for helping out. The motor weve got our eyes on doesn't have the coils so we will probably go LSx style as the MS/gold box can drive them without the ignitor (thanks DG) The 40 tooth tone ring is a bit of an issue, but Mike T says he can do it. Weve got to find a power steering solution as the truck has a strange low pressure system on it that Im unfamiliar with. Hoping we can adjust the pressure using a hydraulic regulator worst case. We should be pulling the trigger on this job as soon as the 2004 v6 exploder with the bad rod leaves the premises...(long story) The 390 in the soon to be v10 powered truck will get put into a nice F350 flatbed for hauling duties so there is win all over this job! Just wish there were about 48 hours in a day.

                              Gday Bruce ,
you certainly keep yourself busy have you done any more with that Cougar . Tha older F trucks are having a revival it appears should make a sweet ride with that V 10 . The Mustang is going well only issue I have is traction .Might look into traction control and new tyres are on order .
