As everyone can see, I don't do a lot to the Chevelle. Last week I changed all of the fluids, cleaned and adjusted the brakes, re-packed the bearings and gave it a tune up. All in preparation for DragWeek 2011.
I was going to go with a small trailer to hold all of the gear, but after a few "practice packs", I don't really need a trailer, just a place to carry spare/street tires. Harbor Freight to the rescue with one of their aluminum hitch baskets. Here are some pics of the hitch I modified and installed yesterday:
This is what I started with, it's original application was an unknown year Dodge minivan. My neighbor was cleaning out his garage and brought it over to see if I could use it for anything (this was last summer). I took it more or less to be kind, but eventually it ended up on the scrap pile to be recycled .... good thing I hadn't done a scrap run yet.
After a few "splices" and flipping the ends over to make it fit the width of the car, and some different sized wedge spacers, it bolts on like it was made for the Chevelle. A side benefit of this is increased crash protection to the rear of the car....I've always been somewhat leery of being rear ended since I went to 'glass bumpers. This sure shores up the rear ... oh yea, I discovered that the rear frame rails are tweaked. The driver side is about 3/16" higher than the passenger side ... oh well.
Here is the finished install ... I think it looks pretty cool with a hitch on the back.

Interesting, I just did much the same to put a hitch on my Buick - needed to carry my track bike - only difference, I spliced the bottom of the frame rail then welded the cross bar in solid. I agree with you on the no protection, I've got fiberglass on mine as well - and looking at the tank just hanging their doing double-duty as a bumper concerned me as well.Doing it all wrong since 1966Comment

Yea those work great .... don't know if you can tell, but they run horizontal the length of the 1/4, behind the tire. I got tired of cleaning rubber off the 1/4 so one of my old neighbors whipped me up a set out of .063 (I think) aluminum.
Yea Don is in charge of the beer ... but I'm pretty sure a cooler will fit rather well!!!
Officially registered now as well.Whiskey for my men ... and beer for their horses!Comment
