  • Re: My 409/'55 Chevy Project

Well we made the decision this morning to
    go with Ross pistons....11-1's

It's the right thing to do and will pay off when
    everything is put back together.

Looks like dyno day will now be latter part
of February........gives me plenty of time to get
car ready and hopefully the Jardine headers will
    show by then.

From what you told me via PM's, brother.....you gonna need more rubber on the ass end of that thing.

      I'm grinning like a bird-fed cat, and it isn't even my car.........gimme a holler when she's close.

          Hey Joe
          Thanks for askin
We're in the process of getting in a set of 11-1 Ross pistons.

We relied on Callie to put the rotating assembly together and ended
up with the wrong pistons.......less than 8-1 cr.

Good news is the engine made 545 hp....can't wait to see what
it will do with new pistons.
Just hearing run for a few minutes got me pumped....we'll get
          there.

Hopin to have dyno day here in the next couple of weekends.
Interior should be done by then to.

          But hey........starting my sticker collection

Thanks for the update, I remember that they gave you the the wrong pistons. You're right though, should be pretty badass with the bump in compression, too bad you're not within a days drive, I'd love to be in the dyno room when that thing kicks off.

Well you're sure invited if you happen to
                      be in the neighborhood
                      ;D

We've could've taken the easy route here building the 409 and
ordered up some cookie cutter parts.......but wanted to do it our way.

Yeah it's learning process but even after all the aggravation we're still
having fun........and when done the accomplishment will well be worth it all.

Well........today I flat bedded the shoebox out to my
buddies shop where we will be doing the engine install.

Pistons are to be here next week.......interior is to be
                          picked up next Friday.

Dyno day, I'm hoping, will be a week from Saturday.

But the biggest news is I talked to a legend today.
I've been communicating with Jardine Headers.....mostly with Jerod, Jerry's son.

Well today when I called........Jerry himself answered the phone!
We must've talked for 45 minutes.....we first talked about my header situation then
it went to 'back in the day' stuff.
Man did he have some tales.......talking about Garlits, Prudhomme..bunch of familiar
names I couldn't keep up with.

At one point we talked about the old flag starters at the drag strips.
I told him that was all I ever experienced until years later.
He said they really made him concentrate when he got to the line.

One funny story was when he went to the starting line in an open top roadster........he
was taller than the roll cage. We laughed our asses off.
He had to go back take the seat out so he would be lower........funny stuff.

Before we hung up I told him I was honored to have talked with a legend.......he responded by saying
that it was him who was honored.........to talk to someone who is still building their own stuff and
                          not just buying their ride.

He took my name and number and is supposed to get back with me on my headers........for some
reason.........I think I'll probably hear back from him.

                          On it's way

Agreed, Ohio George Montgomery was the same way building my V6 and Art Carr was super nice and helpful on the phone when I called about a TH200-4R for the Riviera. I have run into people that if they don't like your project are really hard to talk to. Ran into that less often but more than once trying to get info.
