On it's way to my house is a harmonic balancer install tool, head gaskets, etc... then I can get some more buttoned up
Also ordered are things like Doug's long-tube headers, and the new Falken tires. My credit card hurts!

Looks very nice! Is the towel intake gasket a super secret speed part? Are the block and pan painted white?

Didn't want to scratch the gasket surfaces, I get a bit crazy about stuff like that when I work on engines. The color is a light gray, same as many trans am and can am race engines back in the late 60's, early 70's.

X2 on the new stuff is good. Mike, the first time you romp on this Mother, your credit card will be as happy as you are. Debt won't last forever but, memories of beating the wee out of your Hot Rod in anger will!!!!

                Keep up the good work!

A box of tubes showed up today but of course, there is a slight complication, drain plug hits header, ugh
Other than that they fit around the engine nicely.

Are those Harland Sharp Rockers? I got a set from Summit and sent them back - they looked horrible.
I'm really liking the light engine color. Stainless headers?

Yes, Harland Sharp rockers, but old ones. These were on the 401 when I bought it so I think they are from the mid-90's.
The 401 was in a mud-racing Jeep Grand Cherokee, seller said this motor was on duty for one season, they are in very good condition.

My budget isn't enough for stainless :P, Headers are bare steel, I thought there may be a need to cut and move things around. I will be cutting off the 3-bolt flange and replacing it with a ball-flange. Also putting in O2 sensor bungs for dyno work and potential EFI.
My focus at the moment is for June, I'll get it together for the optima face-off and possibly live with bare steel 'till fall assuming it doesn't rust too badly. Need to fabricate the collector to X-pipe, and then to existing mufflers.

I NEED to get this running in the next 2 to 3 weeks so I can get it tuned on the dyno in late May and ready for action by June 1!

Interestingly I noticed a puddle on the garage floor under what I think is the original radiator, time to spring for that new aluminum radiator too!

Easy fix - just leave the drain plug out. Problem solved!

Or - You didn't mention what kind of plug was used. If it sticks out at all you could go to a socket head. Our local Parker store has 'em or you could connect with Blulightning (Bob). Now, how you'll change the oil is a different issue.......

I just unpacked the headers last night and test-fit them, noticed the interference and went back in the house.

Tonight I'll do some fiddling and figure out what to do. Not a big problem, it's a steel pan and I have a welder. The only bad thing is that the pan is screwed tight to the motor with all the seals and gaskets nicely bonded in place. I may need to pull it off the motor, maybe not? Time will tell. I may just plug that drain, and put one on the other side where there is plenty of room between the pan kick-out and the header. Long-tube headers are always a pain somehow.
