Hey I said I am going to replace it! The new one is due in tomorrow. That hose has faithfully served me for for at least seven years. It's off the original 231cid. It's been chewed on the bottom of it by the fan, its been rubbed on pretty good by the hood (to escape the fan!). And everytime I would catch it trying to self destruct another layer of Electrical or Duct Tape would go on ;D It's seen 240+*F, it's seen -10*F but now it's time to retire it :'(

Randal, how do you plan to maintain the fuel level in the surge tank? I know you saw gary's improvised float bowl contraption on the studebaker. Can you just have the low pressure pump going into the surge tank and let it back up when the tank is full? or do you have to switch it off somehow to save the pump? (I know squat about carb fuel pumps, lol). or, will you be feeding it with a mechanical fuel pump?

and are there concerns about displacing the air in the surge tank, i.e. will you have to bleed it the first time you fill it up?

I can't believe your getting rid of the piece in the engine with most character. Damn. Now people will have to look at the rest of the engine. Better have the rest of it polished now that you don't have the big distractor up front.

I'm assuming the surge tank will remain full 99% of the time. I planned on (this is all in the testing phase because I don't know what does and does not work) letting a Universal TBI ~12psi pump run full time to fill the tank and use the tank return line to bleed off excess fuel. I've considered using Mechanical, and that is what I will be doing with the T-bird, the mechanical pump will fill the surge tank (and hopefully keep it full). I'm guessing with the regulator return also going to the surge can the only fuel lost will be what's used by the engine, so if the TBI pump can keep up with the volume consumed at WOT then the surge tank shouldn't ever get low, if it can't keep up at WOT then I have 2"x6" pipe worth of fuel before I have to lift, lol, and then some for what the TBI pump can supply. The trick is with such a narrow can (2") the bottom outlet that feeds the high pressure pump should never be uncovered in cornering. I'll let the TBI pump fill the can prior to starting up, as it pours fuel in the air will be pushed back into the gas tank through the return line. With the return line at the top of the can I don't see any siphoning issues draining the surge can with the car off.

I don't want that! I could wrap duct tape around the new hose if you think it'll make it better? :D Patina for radiator hoses :P

The surge tank should stay full all the time. put the return line to the tank at the top, and it will bleed the air out of it. Intake to the high pressure pump on the bottom, it will get liquid all the time. I did this on a car years ago, worked fine

Re: The Silver Buick's well Silver Buick!

That's what I was thinking Jim. When I get off work today I'm going to go pick up the pipe and another end cap and see if I can make a finished product of it today. Then the fun of running the return line to the tank and deciding where to place the high pressure pump. I ended up grabbing a ford unit, I haven't tested it though, and have to figure out where I want to mount the thing. Next to the surge tank? On the firewall? I've even contemplated a bracket off an intake bolt, though the thing is pretty big and the regulator will be there....

I like the concept, but would just detract from the car - now, if you paint it all purdy; then the ducttape goes on so people don't think you're puttin on airs.

So this is about what my surge can/pipe should be.

I'm holding it in the picture for scale. I think I'm going to go down to a 4" pipe to make it fit better where I want to mount it.

Maybe I should wrap this in duct tape too :D :P Hope homeland security doesn't confiscate it :-X

On that vette I worked on we put the surge tank on the inner fender, and the fuel pump along the frame. the frame on those cars is pretty wide up front, and the engine sits pretty far back in the chassis so there was a lot of room. I could see putting it all along the frame rail under the floor if there's room...although the exhaust is probably kind of tight on your car.

I think I'm kind of space limited along the subframe rails with the exhaust. Plus I don't want it sitting too low and exposed.

I'm also looking at the Smog Pump bracket, perhaps mounting it to that? Makes for a very short feed line and short pressure line. Look at where the fuel line going to the carb is. It's fed from the area where the surge can is going, and I have a small insulated mounting bracket holding it in place on the smog pump mount. It would also eliminate Fuel Pump vibration noises being heard in the car. Pressure the rails up from the front, regulate and return the fuel from the rear? (Hey look, pre-duct tape! This was in March or April.)

Sure hope you don't have to go through any gov't check points with that "surge tank" strapped to your car. Cuz it kinda looks like something dangerous.
