are you nagging Mark Neal yet? Need help?
hey, I can't find it in here ... you're using an HHR fan right? Shroud and all? I'm at the point where I need to either put the mechanical fan on or get an electric and i am leaning towards an electric. The extra room would be nice.Flying south, with a flock of bird dogs.Comment

I have a 15" electric but I'm not sure what it's from. trussell might know or it might have been on the truck when he got it - you can PM him. Anyhow, it wouldn't fit with the M-B so I got a couple of 10" universal fans from Speedway and have this sitting around the shop - yours for postage. I'll eat the "handling" (whatever the heck THAT charge is for!).

Mark PM'd me and said he would know something Thursday. Yes I am running an HHR fan. It is awesome and I highly recommend them.
Worked on the baffle a little at lunch.

I decided to bend the sides up to make it easier to weld. I have since changed my mind and will only have some tabs on the sides to weld to. The main reason is because this needs to be curved a bit to allow for better drainback.

So far.

I have plenty of metal to make a version 2.0 should I really jack this one up.

Thanks for being ahead of me on yet another project - I need to make adjustments to the falcon oil pan, remove as much of the front sump of the fox pan as I can to make room to move the steering rack up, then make the rear sump larger, and add a baffle - just like you're doing.
well done as usual.
this will be a great tig project. There's always something new to learn.Comment

Randy Malik (whose advice I have been following) just chimed in and said it would be fine to leave it flat if I wanted. I think I will fill the pan with water tomorrow and see how many quarts it takes to submerge it and where 6 quarts comes up to.Life is short. Be a do'er and not a shoulda done'er.

This stock truck pan is factory set up for 6 quarts?
Are you running a remote oil filter?
That's another way to get added capacity if you have the real estate to mount it.
I remember some guys with Cleveland powered pintos used to run two filters, plus the lines, and that added about 3 quarts to the system. There's always something new to learn.Comment

Yes a stock 460 truck pan is 6 quarts and I am just using the filter on the block. Not sure if additional capacity would offer me any benefits.Life is short. Be a do'er and not a shoulda done'er.

just saw this - thanks for the offer Dan! I already ordered the HHR fan, it was attractively priced at 52.29 new with lifetime warranty and shipped...Amazone OneClick is a real problem for impulse buys. The fans look to fit really nice.Originally posted by DanStokes View PostI have a 15" electric but I'm not sure what it's from. trussell might know or it might have been on the truck when he got it - you can PM him. I didn't have a lot of time to fiddle today, but I did have a chance to fill the pan with water to see where the oil level is.
The setup.

3 quarts

4 quarts - this is the level I was most interested in. This would likely be similar to the nominal level when the engine is running.

5 quarts

6 quarts

It's a lot closer to the dipstick tube than I imagined.

Even though the baffle will be submerged, I still think I will make it slope a bit towards the hole.

Do you have clearance around the K-member to add a "trench" connecting the front and rear sump portions?
The cadillac eldorado 500 pans have a similar front sump area.....its super simple to heat up a section and using a piece of steel bar, press a trench into them, connecting the 2 sumps. I dislike the idea of oil puddling in one area with no real movement. Just an idea since you have it off and are tinkering anyways.
You can see our twin sumps in this side view. (I also pressed out the starter divot for more capacity on this pan, where the paint is buggered)

I had a little time last night to work on this.
I cut out the hole, flanged it and added a bend near the centerline of the hole to make it match the contour of the pan better. The notch for the pickup tube looks a little wonky, but I don't care. I just need to test fit it again and if it is ok, weld it in.

That is clean! Remember, if you burn through the pan, a little JB weld and a band-aid will keep the oil in just fine
