(Words and Photos By Mike Brooks) A few weeks ago I took the opportunity to head over to Thompson,OH to check out the action at the annual Gasser Reunion at Thompson Raceway Park. TRP has been around since 1958 and was one of the origins of the gasser movement back in the day. They’ve been putting on this show since 2002 and it’s been growing larger ever since.
The weather couldn’t have cooperated more this weekend. The pits were chock full of nostalgic gassers, altereds, rail jobs, and other cool drag cars. Tons of vintage parts were looking for adoption at the swap meet on the grounds as well. There were also several show vehicles, tribute cars and hot rods on display throughout the pits and beside the staging lanes. The stands were packed to the gills and spectators were all over the grounds checking out the cool smorgasbord of nose-high front ends, chrome, metal flake paint, and dragstrip action.
This historic Thompson Gasser Reunion and showdown is definitely one to put on your list of “can’t miss” events of the year. Lots of cool iron(and fiberglass), a historic facility with a great staff, and a lot of cool people from the U.S. ,Canada, as well a few Aussie’s I met who dropped in to see what this show is all about, make this one of those events you’ll never forget.
I shot photos for over 11 hours straight, and loved every second of it! This even is so great, I can’t express how much fun it is. Plus, the staff at TRP are excellent and gave me all the access I needed to put together great galleries for all you fellow BangShifters.
