“Hemi Joel” Nystrom is one of BangShift’s more well-heeled forum members. That’s not a dig at him either, as he is a through-and-through gearhead: as far as I am aware of, he is the only Duesenberg owner on the site (and he will drive it around), and in his background is a F.A.S.T 1967 Hemi GTX. Currently on his project plate is this 1931 Plymouth, which is being built in the vein of a traditional hot rod. Joel wanted to do a hot rod ever since he set eyes upon a rotting Model A hot rod in a lot when he was in high school. He never did get the Model A, but over time he acquired the Plymouth, and with the larger cab and the right proportions (and, I’m sure, his stash of go-fast Mopar pieces handy), the decision was made to make the Plymouth a stomper.
In the lead picture, take notice of the firewall. See all of the bead rolling work done? That was accomplished when he made the decision to actually make a bead rolling tool set. Anyone who makes the tools they need to work on the project is alright by us.
The project is still under construction and the powertrain has been in flux from the start, but at press time it looks like the Plymouth will be getting a Chrysler 392 hooked to a T56 transmission. With luck, the car will be making an appearance at Drag Week, and we can’t wait to see it rolling out of the burnout box in full song. Take a flip through his build thread and check out the work that has gone into this coupe!
That is going to be sweet, I always wanted a all Mopar street rod myself.
Nice car, wish I had neighbors like Joel and Jay Brown! Between the 2 of them they can build anything. And their not into chebby’s like everybody else.
Well-heeled… I’ve never been called that before. That has a nice ring to it. Do you have any Grey Puopon?
Thanks for featuring my Hot Rod project! I haven’t been working on it this winter due to other projects that I have had to finish, but I need really need to kick it into high gear so it is ready to drive this summer!
