Camaro Fans, Rejoice: The Sixth Generation Camaro Will Debut On May 16th in Detroit

It’s official: we have the date that the next-generation Camaro will debut at Belle Isle in Detroit. May 16th the veil will be dropped and the car, which we’ve seen in it’s wrapped test mule form HERE, will be introduced to the world. Hot on the heels of the S550 Mustang, the Camaro, now on GM’s Alpha platform (see also: Cadillac ATS) is expected to be lighter. That’s about the extent of what we know. What is rumored is a wide array of engines. The V8 options will stay, we won’t be mad to see the ATS-V’s 455hp/445tq twin-turbo V6, but there may also be a turbo-four in the works, which would be the first four-cylinder Camaro since the early 1980s. The design has been rumored to place more emphasis on the second-generation’s design cues, but to us it looks like a 7/8ths scale fifth-gen Camaro with minor visual tweaks. There’s a lot of history behind the Camaro nameplate, and GM knows that they have to get it right.

Here’s GM’s press release:

2016 Camaro Drops Cover on May 16 in Detroit

DETROIT – Chevrolet is inviting fans to see the all-new 2016 Camaro on Saturday, May 16, in Detroit. The sixth-generation Camaro will cap a day-long celebration on Belle Isle, the 982-acre island park that is home to the Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix May 29-31.

“This will be an event Camaro fans will not want to miss,” said Todd Christensen, Camaro marketing manager. “This is only the sixth time we have introduced an all-new Camaro. We wanted to share the moment with the customers and fans who have helped make Camaro both America’s favorite performance car for the past five years, and a cultural icon since 1967.”

Chevrolet expects approximately 1,000 people to attend the Camaro reveal, which will also include:
• A “Camaro Museum” display of the most significant vehicles from the brand’s history
• Hot-lap rides in the 2015 Camaro Z/28 around the Belle Isle Grand Prix course
• Meet-and-greet opportunities with Camaro designers and engineers.
• Camaro-only parking for owners

The event is free, however space is limited and registration is required. Attendance will be allocated with priority given to fans who agree to bring their Camaros to Belle Isle. For more information, or to register, please visit www.thecamarosix.com.

Actually …. absolute crap comes out of Detroit of late . 99.999% being rehashed old junk in a new party dress .. the rest … badge engineered , outsourced garbage posing as bespoke and/or new .

Ya wanna know why ? Because idiots like you keep blindly supporting Detroit selling us crap regardless of how bad it is under the guise of blind Patriotism .. that at its best is misguided , misinformed and misapplied despite the fact that NOTHING built by GM these days is majority manufactured in the US . Including the pos Silverado .. which has the least US based content of ANY pick up sold in the US ! Most of it coming from China !

Want better from the [ no longer even close to being ] Big Three ? Vote with your goram checkbook . Guaranteed .. if they lose enough sales … they\’ll either get their acts together … or disappear … rather than being the Living Dead they [ FCA & GM ] that they currently are … STILL … on our dime I might add !

But hey … y\’all keep supporting Fools [ Tea Party ] and the manufactures of outsourced automotive relics . Let me know how that works out for y\’all 😉

      —————————-

As to the new Camaro ?

Oh … be still my beating heart . The last iteration of the Holden [ which aint holden on anymore ] based Camaro … all but guaranteed to be as bad if not worse than the last one ! Assembled in Canada once again no doubt

But hey … no matter what the end result … with the current state of affairs at GM …. the new Camaro will probably end up trying to kill you . Just like the rest of GM\’s line up

Wake up and smell the manure folks . Before it buries you !

Let me guess CK the girl you loved was stolen by the jock in the Z28, leaving you to cry alone in your Saab. Or did a Camaro touch you inappropriately sometime. There is no other way to explain your hatred.

Put the bottle down, every once in a while you are coherent, only to succumb to the bottle again.

I’m hoping they’ll do something really crazy for this model, like that supercharged DOHC six from the Caddies with the wick turned way up or something on par with the nutso 4-banger in the Mustang.

The ONLY thing genuinely crazy GM could do with the new Camaro is to

FINALLY BUILD THE DAMN THING RIGHT !!!

As to the EcoSnooze 4 banger in the Muskox ? Give it a rest son . Read the reviews . Look at the data . Pay some freaking attention to the actual news instead of the reams of propaganda being spread around like so much luke warm manure …. It sucks …. just like its pretentious wee little turbo . All the EcoSnoozes … suck .

Too bad in light of how brilliant the freaking Cosworth DOHC Turbo 4 in the now ancient Merkur\’s and Mustang SVO were … decades ago

Hmmmn … Ford … no doubt now drinking from the same Dr Tim /WW infused water fountains the fine folks at GM [ and FCA ] are imbibing from

Hoping GM will do something interesting, original or outside of their “V8 everything” mantra is like putting a rock in the fridge and hoping it becomes a sandwich, but I still would like to see something off their beaten path. My breath is not being held, though.

        1. BeaverMartin

I for one support the “V8 everything” mantra. I think they should put one in a Sonic. To me that’s outside of the box. To each his own though.

          1. mooseface

There’s nothing wrong with a V8 in the long run, but I’m just hungry to see them break their own mold.
The last time GM tried to be truly innovative was with the Corvair, ever since they’ve basically run three main engine choices. It feels a little bland.

I guess I’m just hoping they’ll eventually roll out some kind of crazy skunkworks engine, something truly ridiculous like a supercharged 2.2 liter V6 that winds to 1100 and makes 80 ponies a cylinder. That would be insane, and totally outside the box and would probably draw a lot of interested owners.

It won’t ever happen, especially since GM is so ironically miserly, but one can hope, right?

      2. Patrick

Yeah, great motor only available here with an auto. Pinto based tech is becoming obsolete. Gin or Tequila tonight?

Can’t wait to see how GM responds to the new Mustang. Looks like interesting engine choices. So much technology in the new muscle cars! There’s a ’15 EcoBoost 4 banger Mustang running 12’s at the local track with pretty much tires and a tune. Guy says he’s still getting great mileage and it’s his daily driver. Has 40k on it already! GM’s new Camaros are a great package, and I’m sure they’ll do what they can to give Ford a run for their money! The Pony car wars are back! It’s a great time to be a car guy!

Am I the only one that immediately ignores any posts by “Colorado kid”. What a rambling moron.

Anyway – at 1st glance I was shocked because I really thought it said #Camarosux instead of #camarosix. These new muscle cars are so impressive. The entire package of power, handling, and fuel economy. Plus the fit/finish/quality just gets better every year it seems.
