There is a fine line between show car and beater, and it varies a little from person to person, but it goes like this: is it too nice to take out into the rain? It’s a show car. Is it so raunchy that you don’t want anybody seeing you in it? It’s a beater. It’s not a black-and-white definition by a mile, but you get the idea. This 1972 AMC Gremlin X, then, should easily straddle the line for pretty much anybody. It’s not quite perfect and not quite ugly enough, but the 401ci V8 shoehorned under that scooped hood will make up for any faults.
How can you not like a tubbed V8 Gremlin? Sure, purple isn’t everybody’s color, and the arrow graphic could be replaced with the Gremlin X stripe package, but on the surface, this was someone’s toy that appears to have weathered some time nicely. The seller says that there’s hail dents and has included pictures, but considering that it’s up on eBay right now with an (at press time) bid of just over $3,000, we can overlook a lot of faults. Just the thought of tooling around with this instant-wheelie machine makes us smile.
From the ad: This car has gone 11.50 at 2600 feet altitude. It has a 401 ci V-8 with turbo 400 transmission nice gauges 9″ Ford rear end with 410 gears, line lock, roll bar, race seats. This car is way overtired for only 410 gears with a smaller tire I am sure it would go 5tenths quicker. Paint is fair will not take much to do a little straightening and paint. Sounds great runs and drives the same. Buyer pays all shipping and handling and question please call me at 303-90-STEVE. CAR IS OVER 10 YEARS OLD SO MILES ARE EXEMPT. Good luck bidding you will have fun with this ride. Delivery possible from Sidney NE to. You all know if someone gave you a GREMLIN you couldn’t put it together like this for less than $17000.00 so get to bidding and DON’T MISS OUT I AM LISTING THIS AT NO RESERVE LAST PERSON BIDDING OWNS IT. SO GET TO BIDDING AND GREAT LUCK TO YA AND DON’T BE KICKING YOURSELF FOR BEING CHEAP AND NOT BIDDING WHAT YOU KNOW ITS WORTH. I definitely like the car. I actually kinda like the crappy purple paint and graphic, but if I felt the urge to clean it up I’d go full-on Wally Booth Pro Stocker with it.
Driver – leave it the way it is, maintain it well, & drive the snot out of it.
I love it! I’m not a car show guy, but I’d take it to the local car show as is. Nick is right though it would look awesome in R/W/B pro-stock livery.
It would be awesome as an old style Pro Stock, it already has the scoop!
I’d drive the hell out of it before doing any updates.
In the early 70s there was an AMC dealer in the Phoenix area that was selling 401 Gremlins, they even had a fly and drive program. I wanted to buy one but can’t remember why I didn’t. Oh yeah, I was a young family man stationed at Kincheloe AFB, MI and didn’t have any money. Yeah, that’s why. . . I remember now. Anyway, I wonder if this is one of those?
He suggests going to a smaller tire will gain a half second ? I wonder what calculator he uses?
WHERE IS THIS CAR AND HOW MUCH ARE THEY ASKING? THX, JEFF
