Not An April Fool’s Joke: This Is A Proposed Intercontinental Highway System

Not An April Fool’s Joke: This Is A Proposed Intercontinental Highway System

(Map photo: CNN) What you are looking at is a rough idea of a 12,910 mile long intercontinental highway system that was recently proposed by Russian Railways president Vladimir Yakunin. The proposed “Trans-Eurasian Belt Development” project would, among other things, create a trans-Siberian highway system that would connect London, England to New York City by utilizing existing highways and roads while developing roadway systems along the existing Trans-Siberian Highway and between the entrance point to Alaska, projected to be slightly north of Nome, to Fairbanks, the western terminus of the Alaskan Highway over 500 miles away. The 55-mile gap between Alaska and the Okhotsk region of Siberia across the Bering Sea (seen in The Deadliest Catch) presents another challenge, one that has even fewer answers. But Yakunin seems persistent that this could actually work. Quoting the Siberian Times, “According to Mr Yakunin, TEPR could become the GOELRO of the 21st century, in reference to the large-scale electrification of Russia proposed and implemented by Lenin and Stalin between 1920 and 1935.” Um, not that I’m a real history buff or anything like that, but the Stalin era of Russian growth and industrialization was built upon the concept of forced labor. Not the first person that should have been mentioned, but that’s just a thought.

At this point, consider this a flash in the pan. The project would have costs in the trillions of dollars, there isn’t a good answer for what to do about crossing the Bering Sea, and besides, at 12,910 miles long, just think of the road-trip fun that would be had…two oil changes later. As much as an international flight in coach can suck, I’d happily buy a plane ticket and sit for hours. If you drove 500 miles in a day, it would take almost a month to make the proposed trek. Could you live in a car with other people for a month on end? I don’t think so.

You will be most welcome, they regularly use Miata’s to fill potholes over there! lol

What this isn’t done yet? 55 miles across the Bering sea? Uh ferry? Or maybe a chunnel, like between England and Europe? I’m ready to go. I got an old Cevy truck, tools, and a sense of adventure.
