Ok, maybe it is nothing more than sweet music to my ears, but whatever. This 1977 Chrysler Cordoba’s burnout at last year’s Mopar Nats is a stout shot at burning the rears off by a car that a lot of people spent a lot of time writing off. The underpinnings are 1971 Charger, but the body shape, the vinyl roof, and the curse of Ricardo Montalban’s “Corinthian leather” quip overshadowed Chrysler’s personal luxury coupe. This was one of the last big-block equipped midsize cars, with the 400ci big-block available through 1978, and if you know what you’re doing under the hood (and if your trash can gets filled with Lean Burn junk ripped off of the engine) then the Cordoba suddenly turns into a Charger in a pimp suit that is more classic nostalgia than it is comedy sideshow. And that noise…the sound of a Mopar big block spun up in anger is awesome to behold.
