Yesterday Lohnes showed off Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Jeep SJ that is currently on eBay. We love the full-size Jeep trucks and SUVs around here, but brodozer wheels and a connection to West Coast Customs soured what would be an otherwise awesome truck, and then there was the price: $85,000. NOPE! While the SJ Cherokee/Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer has somehow attained a cult market within collector cars, there is no way I, nor anyone else of sound mind and body, should pay that much for a Jeep. Unless you really want to know what the Terminator smells like, skip it.
If you’re going to shell out decent coin for a nice SJ, do it right and start with a clean truck. In this case, right next to the Get To The Choppa special was this clean burgundy 1983 Wagoneer. This is an AMC-era truck (which really makes no difference except for minor trim, emblems and taillights) that was a one-owner vehicle from new until last year, bought by an individual who fastidiously maintained the truck until his end. Only the cruise control throws fits, but according to the listing, it always did that, so no loss there. The 360ci AMC V8 has 87,000-ish miles on the clock, and if you doubt that, look at the interior and prepare to call in an expert to prove me wrong.
Would you…could you…modify this truck? As much as I can appreciate the condition it is in right now, tasteful modifications aren’t out of the question for me personally. A slight suspension lift to set the Wagoneer on 33s, an internal rework on the 360 and to me, it would be perfect. I wouldn’t change a thing about the body or interior, this is one of the nicer SJs that have been on eBay. And at a current bid of $19,000, it’s an absolute bargain compared to that freak show that smells slightly of California and body oil.

Just noticed the qually nice white one in the background. My wants for a Grand Wagoneer are extremely strong but they have all but vanished here in the North Country. My sister had a particularly well-used, post-downsized one for her first car. Even as beat as it was, that thing would go anywhere and could carry a small army

That is a clean Wagooneer. I’d keep it stock. No one will believe me, but these are the next generation’s 69′ Camaros. In about 10-15 years 401 powered cars will be grabbing huge money at B. Jackson. This one is too clean. I’d have to get another one to lift to the sky, convert to diesel, and generally beat on.
My parents have 5 wagoneers and one 79 Cherokee Chief…..they are addicted ot the damn things…..
Sounds like an intervention is in order…Have them give me one to me, a loving AMC owner, to break their harmful addiction before it gets out of hand.
My dad bought one at an auction. Was a big POS. Was a stick with a blown trans & took 6 months to get the parts to fix it…Needed a good swap…
