Florida Driver Jumps His Tahoe At An Opening Bridge While Messing With His GPS System

Florida Driver Jumps His Tahoe At An Opening Bridge While Messing With His GPS System

First it was the radio controls. Then it was driving while eating. Then phones. Then the really stupid stuff like reading the newspaper. Driving distracted is simply dangerous, because you are not actively in control of the two-ton lump of metal, rubber and other assorted bits and fluids. Your attention is focused elsewhere, and things can happen in a very short bit of time, especially when you are at any speed. 29-year-old James Montano is a recent graduate of the “learn by doing” academy, because his accident was caught on CCTV. Montano was driving toward Flagler Bridge, near Palm Beach, Florida, when for reasons only known to him, he decided to start messing with his GPS system. That loss of attention caused Montano to not notice that Flagler Bridge, a raising drawbridge, was actively raising up. And we are willing to bet that if it weren’t for the warning arm smacking his Tahoe as he drove through it, he wouldn’t have known until the moment that the SUV went airborne and landed. His luck lay in that the bridge was open just enough to let the truck jump, but closed enough that it landed on the other side of the road. Montano and his passenger were checked out for minor injuries and Montano was cited for reckless driving. We don’t know if he has been made an honorary Duke Boy yet or not.

“It’s got a cop motor, a 440 cubic-inch plant; it’s got cop tires, cop suspension, cop shocks. It was a model made before catalytic converters so it’ll run good on regular gas. What do you say, is it the new Bluesmobile or what?”
