The 1941 Tatra T87, A Car Way Ahead Of It’s Time – Rear-Engined, Air Cooled V8 And Aerodynamic!

The 1941 Tatra T87, A Car Way Ahead Of It’s Time – Rear-Engined, Air Cooled V8 And Aerodynamic!

If you get a chance to go to the Lane Motor Museum in Nashville, Tennessee, you will find that among the numerous interesting cars that fill the building are a collection of Tatra vehicles…thirteen of them, in fact. Compared to vehicles like the Helicron and the unbelievably massive LARC-LX, they seem rather tame and almost pedestrian…in fact, if it weren’t for the Tatra name throwing you, they could be just about any Euro spec car at first glance. Built in Czechoslovakia, Tatras were designed to be technologically forward, and they were. The aerodynamic properties of such models as the T77 and T87 are so good that they can be compared with a BMW i8…yes, BMW’s new hybrid coupe. Designed to be excellent touring cars that would excel on the Autobahn and motorways, most Tatras remained elusive to anyone on the western side of The Wall and even today aren’t well known. Only a few made it to the states, and outside of the Lane Museum, there are literally a handful of cars around, and Paul Greenstien might have the next largest collection, including this refurbished 1941 T87. Cool car. Chysler tested miniature models of the Airflow as early as 1930. Not that it helped this colossal failure in sales.

There is one in Hemmings for sale that’s been sitting in a barn for decades and the guy wants $1,000,000 for it plus what ever the IRS taxes would be on that selling price. I have seen it in Hemmings for years. Look it up it’s in Texas. The add itself is funny enough to look up and read.
