What if I told you there was a kart race, on a banked 1/9 mile dirt oval, in a backyard in California, that brought out champions from more than 20 dirt and asphalt racing series? It’s true. It’s called the Daltonapolis 500 and it’s put on by Robert Dalton, driver of the Flashpoint Streamliner at Bonneville, and his boys. Well specifically son Michael who orchestrates this crazyness. And it happens in December. And there is no purse, no winnings, no bullshit. Just guys racing and having fun and talking smack and not worrying about saying the right thing on camera for the sponsors. Which is exactly why we are SO IN THIS YEAR! We’re working on the scheduling, but our plan is to haul our asses up north to San Martin California and not only race in this bad boy, but also stream it live for your viewing pleasure. What could possibly go wrong?
The video below, shot by Martin McKeefery, a Super Modified Champion in his own right, shows the 2010 running of the race and shows Mark Chaves Jr. taking the win. Clay Daly, dirt late model and modified champ, was running up. Other drivers included Adam Kaeding, Ryan Bernal, Scott Pierovich, Nick Decarlo, Matt Sargent, Andy Obertello, Bobby Dalton, and world famous fuel car car chief and clutch master, Joe Hamilton.
While the whole idea of building track in your backyard, and inviting your racing buddies over to play, is as good as the idea needs to be, there is something special about this one for me. I went to high school with some of these guys, San Martin is right down the street from my home town of Morgan Hill, and these guys all kick ass. It will be old home week and we’ll have all kinds of friends out their cheering us on, betting for and against us, and I’m sure a lot of adult beverages will be consumed during the winners circle celebration. Watch the video. This is happening. We’ll have more details in the coming weeks.
Track needs a few more moguls down the back straight…..
