As The Snow Falls, We Dream Of An All-Wheel-Drive Rally-Ready Subaru

As I type away, that white dust that turns average drivers into clueless idiots, decent drivers into first-time drivers and skilled drivers into Colin McRae wannabes is falling over BangShift Mid-West. For the most part, we’re getting a medium dusting, but the roads were wet before the temperatures sank like a brick and are now skate-rink ready…not the kind of conditions you want to catch yourself in when your daily driver is a slightly wound up two-ton brick, I can personally promise you that. Now, admittedly, what’s falling in my area of Kentucky right now isn’t squat…one good slightly warm day and it’ll be gone. But winter is here, and snow is a reality no matter what. And before you southwesteners chime in, some of the heaviest snow I’ve seen hit when I lived in Arizona. It’s fun to play in, but it sucks when your ride doesn’t want to play in it. It’s why a Subaru really becomes appealing during the winter. Sure, any STI or WRX could be a blast, but a hot-rodded early 1990s car like this Group A Legacy RS sedan suddenly seems pretty damn appealing. The sound of a turbocharged boxer-four isn’t for everyone, but it sure beats the noise Richard Rawlings makes as he’s hawking V6 Challengers in Alaska, if you ask me.
