I might be off by a year or two from the personal pinnacle, but the second-gen Chevrolet Camaro is my first automotive love for a reason: excellent handling, shapely body, great proportions, and when set up right is one mean, nasty looking ponycar. For the longest time I wanted the pure early 1980s look: shackled rear, slapper bars, back end up two inches over the front. Then I saw the movie “The Gumball Rally” and was introduced to a different take. The Camaro that Ace and Gibson screamed around in gave me the vision for a hunkered down howler on wide mags, and when I discovered what Trans-Am racing was back in the 1970s, that flame just started to burn even brighter.
Seeing this 1971 Camaro is striking that chord again. Currently it’s powered by a 327 that is an option to purchase with the car, but it’s set up for a big-block Chevrolet too. Either way, you couldn’t lose. A Muncie four-speed is an awesome find, but the Winters quick-change rear axle with disc brakes has us foaming, and the monster fuel cell is giving us some seriously bad thoughts. Hotchkis suspension components should make the car hug the road like Chevrolet promised it would do in the advertisements, and all you have to do is paint the machine…if you wish. Honestly, I’m kind of digging the color. A little clean-up work, some reassembly and all you’d hear from my neighborhood is a small-block reaching for the 8,000 RPM mark time and time again!
I love my Fords – but that is just wonderful… I could dig that all day long. CHMG , just don’t bother.
Anyone notice the gofast pedal is attached to the floor ?
an early z/28 option, not offered in 1972 methinks.
72/73 grill but who cares – this is full tilt mean
Who cares what’s factory on this thingie!!!! I’d put the pieces together and drive it like l was made! Wowser!!
Mad is what l meant! Mad!!!!
I Like it. Nuthin like a 2nd gen f-body…Just picked up an 81 Z me-self
BIG POTENTIAL HERE—-like it
old odd flairs somehow arent the worst , at least its not those goofy azz bolt-on flairs they use now that look like they should be on an 80’s 4×4. instant ratty musclecar here.
