I did some research and couldn’t find anything specific about a 1953 Lincoln called El Toro Amarillo that raced in the La Carrera Panamerica way back in the 1950s, but from the door stickers I am sure it at least raced in the mid to late 1990’s. There were several yellow Lincolns that did race in 1953 and who knows if this is actually one of those or not. There isn’t much information in the ad, but the fact that it raced at all is about the only thing that excites me about the car. Especially considering the troubled history of the La Carrera Panamericana in 1953 specifically.
In 1953 there were 182 cars entered in the 8 stage race, but only 60 would finish. Competitors and spectators alike were killed that year, including 6 spectators who were hit by a flipping Ford who’s brakes failed. That Ford was driven by Mickey Thompson. The 6 people killed were all gathered to look at another crash that had happened not long before. In total, 9 people died during the 1953 race, and the result was a much more professional event in 1954, although it would be the last year of the famed race. Later it was resurrected as a timed rally, but luckily without the same level of carnage.
If this car raced back in 1953 or 1954 it would be awesome. If not, it is still a cool old car that would be fun to get together with the same look and what appears to be a pretty nice patina.
