As a general rule of thumb, motorsports in Switzerland are effectively banned and have been banned ever since 1955, shortly after the LeMans disaster that year that saw eighty-four deaths and around 180 injuries. Over the years the ban has been challenged and twice, it’s been rejected, and only in 2015 was there any kind of relaxation of the ban, namely in the name promoting electric vehicle racing.
However, there is a stipulation. The ban is for head-to-head racing, so events like rally, motocross and hillclimbs are still good to go. So you can’t race against someone, but you can race the clock to your heart’s content. In the picturesque scenery that composes most of Switzerland, that sounds like a fine compromise to us. Especially if it means breaking out some of the imports to the region and letting them stretch their legs out on the twisting mountain roads.
Javelin. Trans Am. Camaro. Corvette. Challenger. Names that hold reverence in the States must seem like exotics in Europe. This footage is from the 2003 Reitnau hillclimb, held in a town that been on the map since 1045. How awesome is that?
