One Step Too Far: Engine Failure At 50 PSI For This Camaro!

One Step Too Far: Engine Failure At 50 PSI For This Camaro!

The current automatic power recipe goes a little like this: find LS engine in junkyard. Swap cam, valve springs. Add boost. Done. I’m simplifying it a bit but you know what I mean…the “junkyard turbo LS” build is currently the darling build, the way to get stupid power cheaply. We’ve seen how successful the program is. But we have to caution anyone who is looking at this program with a prosthetic leg beige 1980s box on wheels in mind: there is a limit to what you can get away with. A couple pounds of boost won’t hurt. Prep the fuel introduction right, keep everything cool and you can get away with more. But at 50 pounds of boost, you are automatically on borrowed time. That’s the line in the sand where you might want to consider a billet block…or maybe an increase in cubic inches.

At 50 PSI, everything in the engine automatically becomes subject to inspection and is prone to failure. No GM V8 was ever designed to withstand that kind of punishment! But hey, if you’re sincere about finding the upper end of what’s acceptable for your project, this is a way to go…we guess. That’s a lot of shrapnel flying out from underneath this Camaro, per the footage High Tech Corvette got!
