August 2019 Somernites Cruise: We Stop In For An All-Things Mustang Showcase!

August 2019 Somernites Cruise: We Stop In For An All-Things Mustang Showcase!

Every month from April to October, the town of Somerset, Kentucky proves that it is worth the title of “The Car Cruise Capital of Kentucky”. Their events are always free, happen regardless of the weather, and if you make a weekend out of it, usually the Somernites Cruise staff have something extra special happening before the actual event starts. I hadn’t been to Somerset in …well, way too long, and I decided that needed to be fixed. I needed a reminder of why visiting downtown Somerset in the middle of the day and walking around the town square was good for my system.

Luckily, this weekend is one of their biggest shows by car count. Each month has a theme, and for August that theme is “Mustang”. And they didn’t hold back…for starters, the actual Bullitt Mustang, the 1967 390 GT that Steve McQueen himself wheeled around, was put front and center, courtesy of Mecum Auctions. Ford Performance and Shelby American were on-hand, as were some other royal Mustangs, including two Boss 429 models, an Eleanor model, and streets lined with the modern-day models wearing Highland Green and Torq-Thrusts. Somernites is an every-car-welcome kind of show, but there was no doubt that the Mustang faithful turned up in force.

So what does a photographer who needs to do some walking do? He visits P.J. Burchett’s beautifully-painted IH Metro ice cream van for a quick snack, then gets to wearing out his sneakers walking through town! We have plenty of photos coming down the line, so stay tuned!
