I might have been a touch harsh when it came to the subject of “cars and coffee” meet ups. There have been plenty of issues over the years, and I’ve had moments where I’ve wondered if it was even worth going out. Nevermind that I am not a morning person by any stretch of the imagination…wake up at six a.m. to be nice to a bunch of people? Nah, screw that…I’ll wait until late afternoon before I become personable. But here I was on a beautiful Saturday morning, getting ready to head out to NCM Motorsports Park to check out a new event, “Cars, Karts and Coffee”. The premise is simple enough: the parking lot in front of the Kartplex at NCM would be used for parking and from nine in the morning until just before noon, you were welcome to park and peruse other rides that pulled in. The Kartplex was operating and there were door prizes courtesy of Holley, Mobil1 or Michelin to win.
Camera in hand, I stepped out of the door and started flipping the proverbial coin for what set of wheels I wanted to take. Angry Grandpa would need a full-scale bath before it’s presentable (many thanks to the birds that frequent my neighborhood and the twenty tons of pollen floating about in the air), and the Caddy limo has acquired a paper wasp nest that has added an element of surprise I did NOT want to deal with. So the Great Pumpkin Mustang got the nod. It wasn’t in any better condition than the Chrysler was, but on a gorgeous morning like we were having, sometimes the windows down and the V8 roar is all you need, and that little V8 can sing, if nothing else. I thought I’d be ok parking in the lot. Ten minutes later, I re-parked the Pumpkin in front of the Holley tower to make room for some better pieces, like the dual-quad equipped Dodge and the real-deal Lamborghini Countach that is often driven around Bowling Green. That’s no joke, either…last time I saw that car, the owner was coming out of Harbor Freight.
While the car show was going on, an HPDE event was happening at the track, so add to the scenery the sounds of wailing Porsches, screaming BMWs, and Al Unser’s monster C3 Corvette tearing up the track and you have a pretty solid activity to wake up to. And hey…not one crashed Mustang in sight!
