Dan VanHorn goes out of his way to take care of his racers. Way out of his way, in fact, which becomes apparent when you look at the setup he provides for the MSHS racers for the Woodward weekend. He gets a large lot near The Loop in Pontiac…it might not be deep in the action like it is in Royal Oak, but there’s more than enough fun to be had and plenty of cars rolling by. He coordinates with the Detroit Area Modern Mopars club to work out food and music for the event. He got Livernois Motorsports and Engineering to bring out a mobile dyno that allowed the racers to lay down solid numbers, then put his sprayed Hellcat Charger up and laid out an at-the-wheels set of numbers that is nothing to sneeze at (hint: his wheel torque figure was deep into the 700 ft/lbs range.) And somehow, through connections, Dodge let a Durango SRT, a wide-body Hellcat Challenger, and a SRT Demon appear, and sent Steve Magnante to have a ball with the rest of the delinquents in the lot.
And the cars show up. Not everybody was at the track at Milan for the downpour, but most were. Not every car is modded for speed, but every car looks respectable. But the fun that is had…bar none, that’s the reason to enjoy this show. We could explain the reasons behind the high-end strawberry cheesecake, or the random nicknames or whatnot, but whether your car was laid out with the bags emptied of air or was in front of the viewing crowd, giving in to the “Light ’em up!” chants, we love hanging out with these guys.
