We featured the Stock Eliminator action from Pomona last week, and this week it’s all about Super Stock. While NHRA Stock Eliminator is the original small tire drag racing, NHRA Super Stock kicks it up a notch with much more horsepower friendly rules, but a lot of the same class structure. These cars can run a bigger tire, up to a 33×14.5 in most of the classes, and the engine rules are different. I’d say looser, but that’s not the right descriptor.
In Stock Eliminator you have to run stock, or stock replacement, block, heads, pistons, rods, crank, etc. You must run the stock intake manifold and carburetor. Porting is not allowed. The camshaft can have any specs you want, as long as it maintains factory lift.
Super stock on the other hand, allows for some modifications. Block, crank, rods, pistons are all basically the same as the Stocker, but the heads can be ported and modified as much as you like, as long as the port volume remains the same as NHRA’s factory spec. You can run any camshaft and valvetrain that you like, and any intake that matches the factory configuration and fits under the hood. But you have to run the factory carburetor. And in Super Stock you can backhalf the car and make it a 4-link, ladder bars, or whatever you want.
There’s more to it than that, but those are the basics so you get what the major differences are. And while Stockers do leave with the wheels up, Super Stockers do it even better. They have been known for decades as the best wheelstanding cars in drag racing and there is no shortage of them now.
