Back at the beginning of August we got to see what happens when a Cummins engine in a drag truck suffers a catastrophic engine failure courtesy of the guys at Power Driven Diesel. Their engine went into a runaway situation after crossing the 1/8th mile stripe and once it became apparent that the air shutoff valve had failed, co-owner and driver Todd Welch did the only other thing he could do: he threw it into neutral and let the engine rev to the moon until ultimately a rod bolt failed and the resulting carnage caused the block to become many itty-bitty pieces with a monster fireball to boot. Todd and co-owner Will Terry are sitting down and, in their own words, explaining everything that led up to one of the more interesting and violent engine deaths of 2018. Diesel engines are durable, no question, but they are not infallible and can be blown up. But they normally don’t turn into shrapnel and little chunks quite like this puppy did!
