Now that the Super Bowl is over for us here in the Northern Hemisphere, can we finally get to drag racing? Please? For most, the answer is still “no”…unless you live in a place where orange trees grow perfectly well, it’s still too cool for most tracks to feel comfortable enough to open up the gates, so while the better part of the country sits and waits, we turn to our friends on the other end of the world who are still in the middle of their summer months. The Aussies are having a ball this year, and there is more than just the monstrous burnouts going on. The Australian Nationals at Calder Park is a huge two-day throwdown for the big hitters of the quarter-mile. This isn’t just a test-and-tune night, this is where the big guns come out to play. Nitro cars, Doorslammers, Top Alcohol, bikes, and sportsman racers all battle it out. The scheme is simple: lose and go put it on the trailer. Like a lot of events down there, we love the diversity of the machines you can find. From John Zappia’s Holden HQ doorslammer to a Toyota Tarago (that’s Previa to the North American market) with a twin-turbocharged V8 under the…well, the whole damn van, we think…they came out and put on a solid show.
