NHRA’s goal is always to get 20-something cars in each of the Pro Classes at an NHRA National Event. Years ago that was no problem whatsoever, but in recent years it has not been uncommon for fields to be in the teens, and sometimes missing one or two of the cars needed to fill a 16 car Pro field. Well that ain’t the case this week baby! According to the entry list at this very moment, all but Top Fuel have more than 16 cars entered, which means someone is going home without being able to race this weekend, and Pro Mod has 27 cars entered!
Points leader Mike Castallana will be there, along with BangShift’s own Steve Matusek who is currently sitting in 7th in points, one spot ahead of former series champion Troy Coughlin. Rickie Smith, Danny Rowe, Troy Coughlin, and Raymond Commisso are also on the ticket for this weekend in Houston. Other entries of note, Pete Farber, Billy Glidden, Mike Janis, Clint Satterfield, Von Smith, Mike Knowles, and more. All of the guys on this list know how to race, and know how to win. It’s going to be an interesting event to say the least with this many heavy hitters in town.
Castellana has been the man to beat this season, and is always a tough competitor, regardless of the conditions. But will this season be about someone outside the normal 6 cars you expect to be near the top? Smith, Rowe, Castellana, and Coughlin, Janis, Lang, and Smith will all be working it hard we’re sure, but we would really love to see someone like Steve Matusek or Pete Farber put their hats in the ring for a Series Championship this year. Will it happen? Only time will tell. And with 27 Pro Mods entered at Houston for this weekend’s O’reilly Auto Parts NHRA Spring Nationals, qualifying is going to have a bigger impact on series points than ever before.
